Collection: Cryptocoryne

Cryptocoryne ("Crypts") are rooted plants beloved for their variety of leaf shapes and colors and their tolerance of low-tech conditions. Popular types include Crypt Wendtii (green, brown, red), Crypt Parva (the smallest crypt), Crypt Lutea, and Crypt Spiralis.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Lighting: Low to moderate
  • CO2: Not required
  • Placement: Midground to background; plant roots in substrate
  • Growth: Slow to moderate; a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs help
  • Note: "Crypt melt" is common after planting. The plant may lose its leaves as it adjusts to new water, then regrow stronger from the roots. Don't pull it up, leave it to recover.

Crypts are rooted plants (unlike Anubias and Buce), so they go into the substrate. They're shrimp-safe, undemanding, and a great way to add midground structure and color in a low-tech tank.
