Collection: Floating Plants
Floating plants drift on the water's surface, providing shade, shelter, and powerful natural filtration. Our collection includes varieties such as Salvinia, Frogbit, Red Root Floaters, Water Lettuce, and Duckweed.
- Difficulty: Very easy
- Lighting: Low to high (more light means faster growth and, for some, red coloration)
- CO2: Not required, floaters take CO2 from the air
- Placement: Surface
- Growth: Fast; excellent at absorbing excess nutrients
Floating plants are outstanding nitrate exporters and help outcompete algae. The shade they cast lowers stress for shrimp and fish and is especially appreciated in shrimp tanks. They reproduce quickly, so thin them periodically to keep light reaching the plants below. Shrimp often graze the trailing roots. Note that some species, such as duckweed, spread aggressively.
