Neocaridina Shrimp

Fire Red Shrimp W/ Backline

A dark, deeply saturated red Neocaridina with a clearly visible dorsal backline running the length of the body. A distinct and recognisable grade in the red cherry line with a bolder, more complex appearance than solid-red morphs.

Dark Red Body Distinct Dorsal Backline Neocaridina davidi pH 6.8–7.8 High Grade Red Line Breeds True

Fire Red Shrimp are a high-grade Neocaridina morph defined by two characteristics working together: a deeply saturated dark red body colour and a clearly visible dorsal backline running from the head to the tail along the top of the carapace and abdomen. The backline is a distinct stripe of intensified or differently toned red pigmentation that runs as a defined linear marking along the shrimp's dorsal surface, giving the Fire Red a two-element visual character that distinguishes it from solid-red morphs like the Fire Red Cherry where full-body opacity without visible internal structure or patterning is the goal. In the red cherry grading hierarchy the backline is a characteristic associated with selective line development, and specimens that combine deep red body colouration with a clean, well-defined backline represent a consistent and attractive expression of the morph. Hardy, prolific, and straightforward to maintain on standard Neocaridina parameters.

Fire Red Body with Dorsal Backline

Deeply saturated dark red body -- richer and more intense than mid-grade red cherry stock. The body colouration of the Fire Red is a full, dark red with significant opacity across the carapace and abdomen. It sits at the higher end of the red cherry colour spectrum, with the depth of the red being the primary quality marker alongside backline definition. The red reads as bold and clearly intentional at tank-viewing distance, with none of the translucency or patchy coverage associated with lower-grade red cherry stock. Clearly defined dorsal backline running the length of the body. The backline is a visible stripe of intensified pigmentation along the top of the shrimp's body from behind the head to the base of the tail fan. In well-bred specimens it is a clean, continuous line that contrasts with the surrounding body red, giving the shrimp a structured, two-element pattern rather than the flat single-tone appearance of a fully opaque solid-red morph. The clarity and continuity of the backline is a key quality indicator -- a broken, faint, or inconsistent backline indicates lower-grade stock. A distinct visual character from Fire Red Cherry, which prioritises full-body opacity over patterning. The Fire Red Cherry is bred specifically toward maximum opacity with no visible internal structure or surface marking. The Fire Red with backline is a different expression within the same red cherry line, where the dorsal marking is a feature rather than an element to be bred out. Both are high-grade red morphs; the choice between them is a matter of whether solid opacity or defined patterning is the preferred aesthetic. Breeds true in a dedicated colony -- backline is a heritable characteristic. Fire Red Shrimp with a consistent backline maintained as a dedicated colony will produce offspring expressing the same backline characteristic reliably. As with all Neocaridina, housing with other colour morphs produces offspring reverting toward wild-type colouration over successive generations.

Care & Display

Dark substrate shows the red colouration and backline contrast most clearly. Fine dark substrate including black sand or dark gravel maximises the visible contrast of the red body and makes the dorsal backline most legible. On pale substrate the red reads slightly less vivid and the backline less defined against the background. Standard Neocaridina parameters -- no special requirements. pH 6.8 to 7.8, GH 6 to 14, KH 2 to 8, temperature 65 to 78°F. Dechlorinated tap water is suitable in most regions. No RO water, active substrate, or specialised mineralisation required. Dense planting encourages natural behaviour and shows the backline at its best. Java Moss, Subwassertang, and Cholla Wood provide foraging surfaces and shrimplet cover. Shrimp actively foraging across open hardscape surfaces show the backline most clearly as they move through the tank.
Display Tip

Fire Red Shrimp with a clearly defined backline read differently in a mixed display than solid-red morphs because the dorsal marking adds a linear element that catches the eye as the shrimp moves. In a tank with Snowball or Blue Dream shrimp as contrast elements, the backline of the Fire Red becomes the most visually detailed component of the display -- the element that rewards looking closely rather than just reading the overall colour composition.
