Collection: Nano Fish
Nano fish are the smallest schooling fish in the aquarium hobby, perfect for nano tanks, planted aquascapes, and shrimp setups. Popular types include Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae), Ember Tetra, Celestial Pearl Danio (Galaxy Rasbora), Pygmy Corydoras, and similar species that stay under about 1.5 inches.
- Difficulty: Easy to intermediate (most are easy; some, like Chili Rasbora, prefer soft water and stable conditions)
- Water parameters: pH 6.0 to 7.5, temperature 72 to 80°F, GH 3 to 10 (general guidance; check the care requirements of each species)
- Tank size: 5 gallons minimum for the smallest species; 10+ gallons gives a more stable home and room for a proper school
- Schooling: Nano fish are shoaling species and should be kept in groups of 6 or more (8 to 12+ is better). A larger group reduces stress, brings out color, and produces natural shoaling behavior.
Shrimp compatibility: Most true nano fish are small enough to live peacefully with adult shrimp, making them one of the few fish groups suited to a shrimp tank. Be aware that almost any fish will eat shrimplets (baby shrimp) if it can fit them in its mouth, so a heavily planted tank with moss and cover is essential if you want shrimp to breed alongside fish. For a dedicated breeding colony, a shrimp-only tank is still safest.
Nano fish are ideal for aquascapers and nano-tank keepers who want active movement and color without the bioload or aggression of larger fish. Their small size, peaceful nature, and stunning coloration make them a favorite centerpiece for planted tanks.
