Yellow Shrimp – Superior Shrimp & Aquatics
Neocaridina Shrimp

Yellow Shrimp

Clean, bright yellow from head to tail — one of the most cheerful and reliable Neocaridina in the hobby.

Full-Body Yellow Neocaridina davidi Hardy & Beginner Friendly Standard Neo Parameters Active & Social Planted Tank Ready

The Yellow Shrimp is a selectively bred Neocaridina davidi variant producing clean, full-body yellow coloration from the carapace through the tail. At its best the yellow is bright and opaque, reading clearly across the tank against dark substrates and green planting — a warm, sunny presence that contrasts naturally with blue, red, and black Neocaridina variants in mixed colonies. Hardy, forgiving, and straightforward to breed, Yellow Shrimp carry all the practical advantages of the Neocaridina species while offering a color that feels distinctly different from the reds and blues that dominate most collections. A reliable choice for new keepers and an easy, impactful addition for anyone building a colorful planted tank.

Color & Behavior Over Time

Full-body yellow coloration — at peak expression, the yellow covers the entire body with a clean, opaque quality. Color intensity varies between individuals and improves over generations of selective breeding — the most vividly colored shrimp in a colony are typically the best candidates for continued selective breeding. Color is brightest in stable, established tanks — Yellow Shrimp show their richest coloration in mature tanks with consistent water parameters and good biofilm development. New tank conditions, parameter swings, or stress cause temporary color fading that resolves once the shrimp settle. Post-molt softening is temporary — freshly molted shrimp appear paler and more washed out for 24–48 hours while the new shell hardens. Full yellow coloration returns once the molt is complete. Highly visible against green planting — the warm yellow tone creates a natural, complementary contrast against green mosses and stem plants, making this one of the more visually effective single-color Neocaridina choices for planted aquascapes. Compatible with other Neocaridina variants — Yellow Shrimp can be housed with other Neocaridina color variants on the same parameters, though note that cross-breeding will produce offspring with mixed or reverted coloration over time. Keep variants separate to maintain color lines. Diet supports color depth — a varied diet including carotenoid-rich foods, spirulina, and quality shrimp pellets supports yellow pigment intensity and healthy molting cycles throughout the colony.

Getting Started

1 Introduce to a cycled, established tank — Yellow Shrimp adapt well to new environments but settle fastest in mature, stable tanks with developed biofilm and consistent parameters. Avoid adding to tanks that have just completed cycling or are experiencing parameter fluctuation.
2 Target standard Neocaridina parameters — pH 6.8–7.8, GH 6–12, KH 2–8, and 65–78°F is the full comfortable range. Parameter consistency matters more than hitting ideal numbers — stable, moderate water produces healthier, more colorful shrimp than fluctuating water at perfect values.
3 Use dark substrate to maximize color impact — yellow reads most vividly against a dark or black substrate. The contrast brings out the warmth and brightness of the coloration in a way that light or natural substrate simply cannot match.
4 Add dense planting and coverMosses, fine-leafed plants, and driftwood provide the grazing surfaces and shelter that encourage active, visible behavior and support breeding activity in established colonies.
💡 Bonus Tip

Yellow Shrimp are one of the most visually effective Neocaridina for mixed-color colonies — their bright, warm tone pairs particularly well with Blue Velvet and Black Rose variants, creating strong color contrast that makes every individual easy to spot and the colony as a whole genuinely striking to observe.
