Yellow Goldenback Shrimp (Thick Backline) are a selectively developed variant within the Goldenback line where the gold dorsal stripe has been bred to a noticeably greater width than in standard or even S-grade Goldenback stock. The yellow body colouration is consistent with the Goldenback morph, but the stripe is the defining feature here: wider, more prominent, and bolder in its relationship to the surrounding yellow body. Where the standard Goldenback stripe reads as an accent on a yellow body, the thick backline variant reads as a graphic element that anchors the shrimp's appearance and is the first thing the eye goes to. The contrast between the gold stripe and the yellow body is amplified by the stripe's width -- a wider stripe produces a stronger colour differential that reads at a greater distance and holds attention more effectively in a mixed display. Hardy, beginner friendly, and fully viable on standard Neocaridina parameters.

The Thick Backline
Noticeably wider gold dorsal stripe than standard or S-grade Goldenback -- the defining characteristic of this variant. The thick backline variant is selected specifically for stripe width rather than stripe brightness or body colour depth alone. The wider stripe occupies a greater proportion of the dorsal surface, producing a bolder and more commanding two-tone pattern. In the best specimens the stripe is continuous, evenly wide from head to tail, and clearly differentiated in both width and intensity from the surrounding yellow body.
The stripe reads as the primary visual element rather than a secondary accent. In standard Goldenback the yellow body and the gold stripe are in approximate visual balance, with the stripe as an accent detail on a yellow ground. In the thick backline variant the relationship shifts: the width of the stripe makes it the primary colour element, with the yellow body reading as the field against which the stripe sits. This reversal of visual emphasis produces a more graphic and more immediately striking appearance than standard Goldenback patterning.
Distinct from S Grade and SSS Goldenback, which prioritise stripe brightness and body opacity. The standard grading progression in the Goldenback line rewards brightness of the stripe and density of the body yellow. The thick backline variant is selected for a different quality: stripe width. A thick backline specimen may not have the most intensely bright stripe of an SSS grade, but the width of the stripe produces a visual impact that narrow-stripe high-grade specimens cannot replicate. Both lines are valid; they are different expressions of the Goldenback morph.
Dark substrate maximises the two-tone contrast between body and stripe. Fine dark substrate including black sand or dark gravel provides the visual foundation that makes the yellow body and gold stripe read most clearly. On pale substrate the yellow body blends into the surroundings and the stripe contrast is reduced. Dark substrate is the most impactful single setup choice for displaying this morph.
Breeds true in a dedicated colony -- isolate from other Neocaridina morphs. Thick backline Goldenbacks maintained as a single-morph colony will produce offspring expressing the characteristic wide stripe reliably. Housing with other Neocaridina morphs produces offspring reverting toward wild-type colouration over successive generations. Isolate from all Goldenback grade variants as well as other morphs to maintain stripe width consistency across generations.

Standard Neocaridina Parameters
Standard Neocaridina parameters throughout. pH 6.8 to 7.8, GH 6 to 14, KH 2 to 8, temperature 65 to 78°F. Dechlorinated tap water suitable in most regions. No RO water, active substrate, or specialised mineralisation required.
Varied diet supports colour expression and colony health. Consistent feeding with Snowflake Food, Veggie Wafers, and Almond Leaves for biofilm supports both stripe colour quality and reproductive success. Spirulina-rich foods are particularly beneficial for maintaining the gold tone of the stripe.
Display TipThe thick backline Goldenback in a mixed display reads most effectively alongside morphs where the stripe provides a clear structural contrast. Paired with Black Rose Shrimp the gold stripe reads against near-black bodies with exceptional clarity, and the width of the stripe makes it visible from a distance where a standard Goldenback stripe would be lost. Paired with Blue Dream Shrimp the warm yellow-gold against cool blue produces a complementary colour contrast that shows both the stripe and the body yellow at their most vivid.
