Description
Sunkist Orangeback Shrimp – Superior Shrimp & Aquatics
Neocaridina Shrimp

Sunkist Orangeback Shrimp

Vivid orange coloration concentrated along the back — a bright, hardy Neocaridina that thrives in standard community parameters.

Orange Back Coloration Neocaridina davidi Hardy & Beginner Friendly Standard Neo Parameters Active & Social Planted Tank Ready

The Sunkist Orangeback Shrimp is a selectively bred Neocaridina davidi variant characterized by vivid orange pigmentation concentrated along the dorsal stripe — the back and mantle — against a largely translucent body. The result is a shrimp that reads as distinctly orange from above and from the side, with the coloration most striking against dark substrates and dense green planting. As a Neocaridina, it shares the same forgiving, adaptable nature that makes the species so accessible — tolerant of a wide parameter range, active, social, and straightforward to breed. A good first orange shrimp for new keepers, and a clean, vivid addition to any planted community tank.

Color & Behavior Over Time

Orange concentrated along the dorsal stripe — the coloration runs from the top of the head through the mantle and along the back, with a largely translucent body beneath. The orange tone ranges from soft peach to deep sunkist orange depending on the individual, with the most intensely colored specimens showing rich, opaque pigmentation across the entire back. Color deepens in stable, established tanks — like all Neocaridina, the Sunkist Orangeback shows its best coloration in mature, well-maintained tanks with consistent parameters. Stress, new tank syndrome, or parameter instability causes temporary color fading that recovers once conditions stabilize. Post-molt softening is normal and temporary — freshly molted shrimp appear paler until the new shell hardens over 24–48 hours, after which full coloration returns. This is normal and not a cause for concern. Active, visible grazers throughout the day — Sunkist Orangeback shrimp are confident and constantly moving, picking at biofilm on hardscape, botanicals, plant surfaces, and substrate throughout the day. Their bright coloration makes them easy to track and enjoyable to observe. Colony behavior improves numbers — kept in groups of eight or more, Sunkist Orangeback shrimp are more active, more visible, and breed more readily. Smaller groups can result in shyer, less visible individuals, particularly in larger tanks. Diet supports color intensity — a varied diet including carotenoid-rich foods, spirulina, and quality shrimp pellets helps maintain and deepen the orange pigmentation, supporting both color quality and healthy molting cycles across the colony.

Getting Started

1 Introduce to a cycled, established tank — Neocaridina adapt readily to new environments but do best when introduced to a fully cycled tank with stable parameters and developed biofilm. Avoid adding to tanks that have just completed cycling or are still fluctuating.
2 Target standard Neocaridina parameters — pH 6.8–7.8, GH 6–12, KH 2–8, and 65–78°F covers the full comfortable range for this shrimp. Consistency matters more than hitting exact numbers — a stable tank at the middle of these ranges outperforms a fluctuating tank at the ideal values.
3 Use dark substrate for maximum color impact — the orange dorsal stripe reads most vividly against a dark substrate. Black or dark brown substrate provides the strongest contrast and makes the colony significantly more visible and visually striking than light-colored alternatives.
4 Plant densely and add natural coverMosses, fine-leafed stem plants, and driftwood provide grazing surfaces and shelter that encourage confident, visible behavior and support breeding activity throughout the colony.
💡 Bonus Tip

Feed carotenoid-rich foods regularly — foods containing astaxanthin, spirulina, or natural color-enhancing ingredients directly support the orange pigmentation in this shrimp. A noticeable improvement in color depth is typically visible within two to three molting cycles of consistent, quality feeding.
