Snow Zebra Shrimp

Pale, translucent bodies with soft zebra-like banding — delicate patterning that shines against dark substrates.

Soft White to Translucent Body Zebra-Like Banding Pattern Peaceful Community Shrimp Dark Substrate Recommended Tropical Parameters Planted Tank Ready

The Snow Zebra Shrimp (Caridina sp.) is a selectively bred ornamental line prized for its pale, translucent body marked with soft zebra-like striping across the carapace and abdomen. The contrast between their near-white coloration and the alternating bands makes them especially striking against dark substrates and shaded plant backgrounds. They graze and behave similarly to other Neocaridina shrimp in activity level and temperament, thriving in mature planted tanks alongside mosses, fine-leafed stems, and botanicals that provide both cover and natural feeding surfaces.

Color & Behavior Over Time

Variable banding intensity between individuals — some Snow Zebras develop more defined alternating bars while others show softer, blended streaks; this natural variation is expected and part of the appeal of the line. Post-molt softening is normal — freshly molted shrimp may appear more transparent or washed out until their shell fully hardens, after which the striping pattern returns to full visibility. Pattern stabilizes with age — as shrimp mature and settle into stable water conditions, the striping becomes more consistent and easier to observe, particularly against darker backgrounds. Dark substrates enhance visibility — the pale coloration stands out most against dark inert substrate and shaded plant backgrounds; lighter substrates reduce the visual contrast of the banding. Active grazing behavior — Snow Zebras spend much of their time moving through the tank, picking at biofilm on hardscape, botanicals, and plant surfaces throughout the day. Diet supports coloration and molting — a varied diet of shrimp-specific foods, spirulina-based pellets, and occasional vegetables supports healthy pattern development, reliable molting, and long-term colony success.

Getting Started

1 Use a dark inert substrate — dark substrate is the single biggest factor in making Snow Zebra patterning visible. It provides the contrast needed to appreciate the banding and makes the shrimp significantly easier to observe.
2 Establish the tank before adding shrimp — Snow Zebras do best in mature aquariums with stable parameters and developed biofilm on hardscape and plant surfaces. A cycled, well-established tank reduces acclimation stress considerably.
3 Dial in water parameters carefully — target pH 6.8–7.8, GH 6–12, and KH 2–8. Consistent mineral content supports healthy molting and long-term colony stability.
4 Feed a varied, quality diet — rotate between shrimp-specific foods, spirulina pellets, and blanched vegetables to support healthy coloration, reproduction, and reliable molting cycles.
💡 Bonus Tip

Dense planting — particularly moss walls or fine-leafed stem plants — helps Snow Zebra Shrimp display their striping more prominently by providing natural dark contrast behind them while also giving the colony excellent grazing and hiding surfaces.
