Yellow Goldenback Shrimp (S Grade) - Superior Shrimp and Aquatics
Neocaridina Shrimp

Yellow Goldenback Shrimp (S Grade)

A step above standard Goldenback grade -- deeper yellow body colouration, a more opaque and continuous gold dorsal stripe, and stronger overall colour saturation throughout the body.

S Grade Vivid Yellow Body Bright Gold Dorsal Stripe Neocaridina davidi pH 6.8–7.8 Breeds True

Yellow Goldenback Shrimp (S Grade) are a selectively bred Neocaridina morph expressing vivid yellow body colouration with a bright, intensified gold dorsal stripe running the length of the body. The Goldenback grading system rewards two qualities in combination: the depth and opacity of the yellow body, and the clarity, continuity, and brightness of the gold dorsal stripe. Standard grade Goldenbacks show the two-tone pattern clearly but with some translucency in the body and variation in stripe consistency. S grade specimens show meaningfully deeper body yellow with less translucency, a more continuous and more clearly defined gold stripe with minimal breaks or fading, and stronger saturation overall that reads as a more vivid and more intentional two-tone display at normal tank-viewing distance. S grade is one step below the top SSS grade, representing a high quality line that balances strong colour expression with consistent availability. Hardy, beginner friendly, and fully viable on standard Neocaridina parameters.

What S Grade Means

Deeper, more opaque yellow body than standard grade -- less translucency throughout the carapace and abdomen. The primary difference between standard and S grade Goldenback is the density of the yellow body pigmentation. Standard grade specimens show yellow colouration with noticeable translucency, particularly along the sides and abdomen where the internal organs and musculature are partially visible through the carapace. S grade specimens have denser yellow pigmentation with significantly reduced translucency, producing a body colour that reads as more solid and more saturated at viewing distance. More continuous and clearly defined gold dorsal stripe with stronger brightness contrast against the body yellow. The gold stripe in S grade Goldenbacks is more consistent along its full length, with fewer breaks, fading sections, or irregular edges than standard grade. The brightness of the stripe is also noticeably higher, producing a stronger two-tone contrast between the gold stripe and the yellow body. In the best S grade specimens the stripe reads as a clean, uninterrupted band of intense gold running continuously from head to tail. S grade sits between standard and SSS in the Goldenback grading hierarchy. Standard grade shows the defining two-tone pattern with moderate colour saturation. S grade shows the same pattern at noticeably higher saturation and definition. SSS grade represents the peak of the line with maximum opacity, the most vivid gold stripe, and the most complete colour expression achievable in the morph. S grade is the practical middle tier -- significantly better colour than standard, available in consistent quantities, and the right choice for aquarists who want strong colour without paying peak SSS prices. Dark substrate maximises the visibility of the yellow body and gold stripe contrast. The two-tone yellow-and-gold pattern of the Goldenback reads most clearly against a dark fine-grain substrate where neither colour tone is absorbed into the background. On pale substrate the yellow body blends into the surroundings and the stripe contrast is reduced. Dark sand or dark gravel is strongly recommended for Goldenback display.

Standard Neocaridina Requirements

Standard Neocaridina parameters throughout -- no special requirements beyond good general husbandry. pH 6.8 to 7.8, GH 6 to 14, KH 2 to 8, temperature 65 to 78°F. Dechlorinated tap water is suitable in most regions. No RO water, active substrate, or specialised mineralisation required. The same setup that maintains any other Neocaridina morph maintains S grade Goldenbacks without adjustment. Colour expression improves with stable parameters and a varied, nutritious diet. Like all high-grade Neocaridina, S grade Goldenbacks show their best colour under stable water conditions and with a diet that includes spirulina, varied vegetables, and quality protein. Consistent feeding with Snowflake Food, Veggie Wafers, and Almond Leaves for biofilm supports both colour and reproductive health. Breeds true in a dedicated colony -- isolate from other Neocaridina morphs. S grade Yellow Goldenbacks maintained as a single-morph colony will produce offspring expressing the Goldenback pattern reliably. Housing with other Neocaridina colour morphs produces offspring reverting toward wild-type colouration over successive generations. Maintain as a dedicated colony to preserve grade and pattern consistency.
Display Tip

S grade Yellow Goldenbacks in a tank with Black Rose Shrimp create one of the most effective two-morph contrast displays possible within a single Neocaridina tank. The vivid two-tone yellow and gold of the Goldenbacks reads as bright and warm against the near-matte black of the Black Rose, and both morphs maintain consistent colour with identical care requirements and parameters. Keep the colony ratio at roughly 60 to 70 percent Goldenback and 30 to 40 percent Black Rose for the most balanced visual result.
