Rotala Nanjenshan

A fine-leaved Rotala with extremely narrow, needle-like leaves that build into a dense, feathery stem -- shifting from soft green to warm pink-orange under high light and CO2.

Extremely Fine Needle-Like Leaves Dense Feathery Stem Structure Green to Pink-Orange Colour Shift CO2 and High Light for Best Results Fast Growing Background or Mid-Tank Stem Plant

Rotala Nanjenshan (Rotala sp. 'Nanjenshan') is one of the most finely textured stem plants available in the hobby -- a Rotala with extremely narrow, needle-like leaves that whorl densely around upright stems, producing a feathery, soft-textured column that reads as more delicate and intricate than any broad-leaved stem plant and finer in texture even than most other Rotala species. Under low to medium light without CO2 the plant grows upright with soft green leaves at a moderate pace. Under high light with CO2 supplementation the growth accelerates dramatically, the stems branch more freely, the leaves become even more densely packed, and the upper portions of the stems shift from green through pink to a warm orange-pink that makes Rotala Nanjenshan one of the more colourful stem plants in the catalog without the full intensity of Rotala rotundifolia red. The combination of extreme leaf fineness, dense feathery stem structure, and warm colour potential under good conditions makes it a versatile and visually distinctive background plant. Safe with all Neocaridina, Caridina, and snails.

Texture, Colour and Growth

Extremely fine needle-like leaves -- the most delicate Rotala texture in the catalog -- the leaves of Rotala Nanjenshan are among the narrowest of any stem plant commonly available in the hobby -- thin, short needles whorled densely around the stem that give each individual stem a feathery, bottle-brush character visible at close range and a soft, airy texture at normal tank-viewing distance. A group of stems in the background reads as a fine-textured green-to-pink cloud that contrasts strongly with the bold leaves of broad-leaved midground plants and with the coarser texture of most other background stem plants. Green to warm pink-orange colour shift under high light and CO2 -- under low to medium light the plant maintains a clean soft green. As light intensity and CO2 increase toward optimal, the upper growth tips and newest leaves shift progressively through light pink to a warm orange-pink -- a colour that is neither as coolly magenta as Alternanthera reineckii nor as orange-red as Rotala rotundifolia, but a warm, soft intermediate that reads as gently rosy and warm rather than vividly red. The colour is most saturated at the actively growing tips and fades toward green lower on the stem. Fast growing under CO2 and high light -- requires regular trimming -- in well-fertilised, high-light, CO2-supplemented conditions Rotala Nanjenshan grows quickly and requires trimming every two to three weeks to prevent it from shading other plants or reaching the surface. The trimmed tops can be replanted immediately to increase stem density in the same group or propagate new growth in a different area of the tank. Branches freely when trimmed -- denser over multiple trim cycles -- each trimmed stem produces two or more side shoots from nodes below the cut, progressively increasing the stem count and density of the planting group with each trimming cycle. A group of five stems introduced initially becomes a dense mass of fifteen to twenty stems over three to four trimming cycles without any additional planting -- the most practical way to achieve a full, dense Nanjenshan background group from a starter portion. Grows without CO2 but at reduced pace and colour -- without CO2, Rotala Nanjenshan grows upright at a slower pace and maintains green colouration throughout rather than developing the pink-orange tip colour. It remains an attractive fine-textured green background plant in these conditions but does not reach its full visual potential. CO2 is the single most impactful change for both growth rate and colour development in this species. Iron and micro-nutrient dosing supports colour intensity at the tips -- consistent liquid micro-nutrient fertilisation including iron supports the warm pink-orange colour development at the growing tips. Deficiency in iron or micronutrients results in pale, washed-out tip colour even under otherwise optimal conditions. Daily or every-other-day dosing at the low end of the recommended amount produces more sustained colour than weekly high doses.

Getting Started

1Plant in groups of seven or more stems in the background -- strip the lowest 3-4cm of leaves and plant stems at 1-2cm spacing. The fine texture of Nanjenshan reads as a composed group element rather than as individual stems -- dense planting from the start produces the most effective visual result sooner than sparse initial planting.
2Medium to high light directed at the background planting zone -- ensure the background receives adequate intensity throughout the photoperiod. Shading from other plants over the Nanjenshan stems suppresses both growth rate and the pink-orange colour development that makes the plant distinctive.
3Add CO2 for colour development and fast growth -- CO2 supplementation is the most impactful single addition for Rotala Nanjenshan performance. Without it the plant grows slowly and remains green; with it the growth accelerates and the characteristic warm tip colouration develops over two to four weeks in good conditions.
4Trim regularly and replant tops to increase density -- trim stems before they reach the surface or begin shading lower growth. Replant trimmed tops into the same group to progressively increase stem density. After three or four trim cycles the group is substantially denser and more visually full than at introduction.
Bonus Tip

Rotala Nanjenshan in the background directly behind a group of Anubias Barteri or broad-leaved Cryptocoryne creates the most effective fine-versus-coarse texture contrast achievable with green-toned plants -- the extremely fine needle leaves of the Nanjenshan mass read as dramatically different from the bold, smooth leaf surfaces of Anubias or Crypt when the two are seen together, making each look more distinctive by comparison. With CO2 the warm pink-orange tips of the Nanjenshan add a subtle warm colour element above the cooler deep green of the broad-leaved foreground plants -- a composed, naturalistic layered planting that does not require vivid red plants to achieve colour depth and visual interest across the full plant height range of the tank.
