Red Dragon Stone
A dramatically textured volcanic stone in deep red-brown tones -- one of the most visually striking aquascaping stones available, with a jagged, fissured surface that anchors layouts and provides ideal attachment points for epiphytic plants.
Red Dragon Stone is a volcanic rock prized in aquascaping for its intensely jagged, fissured surface texture and its deep red-brown colouration. The stone's surface is highly irregular -- covered in sharp ridges, deep crevices, and pronounced angular features that give individual pieces a dramatic, almost geological presence in the tank. No two pieces are identical in form; each has its own profile, fissure pattern, and distribution of surface texture. The red-brown colouration is natural and consistent throughout the stone, not a surface treatment, and does not leach colour into the water. Red Dragon Stone is pH neutral and does not affect water hardness or chemistry, making it fully compatible with both Neocaridina and Caridina setups without parameter adjustment. The deeply textured surface is an excellent attachment substrate for mosses, Bucephalandra, Anubias, and Java Fern, and the crevices provide natural shelter and foraging habitat for shrimp of all sizes.
Appearance & Character
Surface, Colour & Form
Deep red-brown colouration -- consistent throughout, not a surface treatment -- the red-brown tone of Red Dragon Stone is a natural property of the volcanic rock and runs through the full depth of the stone. It does not fade, leach, or change colour after prolonged submersion. The intensity of the red tone varies slightly between individual pieces and is most vivid when the stone is wet -- dry pieces appear slightly more muted. Under aquarium lighting the red-brown reads as warm and rich, contrasting strongly against green aquatic plants and darker substrates. Intensely jagged, fissured surface -- the most dramatic surface texture of any common aquascaping stone -- the surface of Red Dragon Stone is defined by deep, angular crevices and sharp ridges that give it a fractured, almost volcanic appearance. This level of surface relief is significantly more pronounced than Seiryu Stone or lava rock, and creates genuine visual depth and shadow within the stone itself. The crevices catch light differently depending on the angle and time of day, giving the stone a dynamic appearance that changes as tank lighting shifts. Each piece is unique -- no two share the same profile or fissure pattern -- Red Dragon Stone does not come in predictable shapes. Individual pieces vary in overall form from broad and flat to tall and angular, and the distribution of ridges, crevices, and surface texture is entirely unique to each piece. This makes selecting and arranging multiple pieces a creative process -- the goal is to find pieces whose natural profiles complement each other and create a coherent composition. Pairs naturally with darker driftwood -- red-brown stone against dark wood is a classic aquascape pairing -- the warm red-brown of Red Dragon Stone contrasts particularly well against the darker tones of Spider Wood and Dragon Wood. The combination of angular stone and branching wood in complementary warm tones creates a naturalistic hardscape foundation that reads as cohesive without being matchy.
Water Chemistry & Safety
Parameters & Compatibility
pH neutral -- does not affect water hardness or chemistry -- Red Dragon Stone does not leach carbonates, does not raise KH or GH, and does not affect pH. It is fully safe for Caridina setups with soft, acidic water as well as standard Neocaridina parameters. No acid testing, buffering, or parameter monitoring adjustments are required when adding Red Dragon Stone to an established tank. Rinse thoroughly before use -- surface dust and loose particles are normal -- like all natural stone, Red Dragon Stone carries surface dust and fine particles from cutting and handling. Rinse each piece thoroughly under running water and scrub with a stiff brush before placing in the tank. A brief soak of 30–60 minutes after rinsing settles any remaining particulate. The stone does not require boiling or extended preparation beyond this. Fully safe with all shrimp at every life stage -- the crevices and surface texture of Red Dragon Stone provide natural shelter and microhabitat for shrimp and shrimplets. Shrimp actively explore the surface, graze biofilm from the deep crevices, and shelter in the larger fissures. No chemical or physical risk to shrimp of any species or size.
Aquascaping
Layout & Plant Attachment
Excellent attachment surface for epiphytic plants -- the crevices hold thread and glue securely -- the deep, irregular surface of Red Dragon Stone provides more total attachment area and more varied positioning options for mosses, Bucephalandra, Anubias, and Java Fern than smoother stones. Plants can be wedged into crevices, tied with cotton thread to ridges, or glued to flat sections of the surface. The texture holds attachment points securely and the irregular surface makes plant positioning look naturalistic without deliberate effort. Stack or arrange multiple pieces to build depth and scale -- Red Dragon Stone is commonly used in groups of two to five pieces arranged in a composition rather than as a single focal element. Stacking smaller pieces against or partially behind a larger anchor piece, with substrate partially covering the base of lower pieces, creates the appearance of a natural stone formation emerging from the substrate. Odd numbers of pieces in varied sizes produce the most naturalistic compositions.
Specific Piece Requests
Every piece of Red Dragon Stone is unique in size, profile, and surface texture. If you have a specific preference -- a taller, more angular piece; a broader flatter piece; a particular size range; heavier or lighter surface fissuring; or anything else -- leave a note at checkout and we will do our best to select a piece that matches your needs from current stock. We cannot guarantee an exact match, but we read every note and pull accordingly.
