Growth & Behavior Over Time

Broad, deep green leaves on an upright rosette — the Radican Green produces lance-shaped to ovate leaves with rich, solid green coloration and a smooth, slightly glossy surface. New growth emerges lighter and brightens as leaves mature, giving the plant a layered quality even in uniform green. More compact than standard large sword cultivars — the Radican growth form keeps petioles shorter and more upright than many Echinodorus species, making this plant significantly more manageable in mid-sized aquariums. It will still become a substantial specimen — allow at least 40 gallons for long-term comfort. Crown must remain above the substrate — the central rosette crown must sit fully exposed above the substrate at all times. Burying it, even partially, causes rot to spread from the growing point outward and is the most common cause of sword plant failure after planting. Heavy root feeder that benefits from a rich substrate — Echinodorus cordifolius is a particularly vigorous root feeder. A nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs placed near the root zone produce noticeably faster establishment and more robust growth than inert substrate alone. Propagates via runners with adventitious plantlets — established plants produce horizontal runners that develop plantlets at regular intervals. Allow each plantlet to reach four to five leaves with visible roots before separating for reliable transplanting. Broad leaf surface supports shrimp grazing — the wide, textured leaves develop biofilm over time that Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails graze on consistently, adding functional value to its structural role in the tank.

1 Plant in nutrient-rich substrate or add root tabs — as one of the more root-hungry Echinodorus, the Radican Green establishes and grows best when root-zone nutrients are immediately available. A fertile substrate is ideal; root tabs placed 2–3 inches from the crown are an effective alternative in inert setups.

2 Keep the crown fully above the substrate — plant deep enough for stable anchoring but ensure the growing point sits clearly above the substrate surface. This single step prevents the most common cause of Echinodorus loss and requires no special tools or technique — just mindful planting depth.

3 Provide medium light and dose fertilizer consistently — medium intensity lighting supports steady, healthy growth without encouraging the algae that high light can introduce to slow-establishing root plants. A regular fertilizer routine covering both macros and micros sustains the plant's appetite as it matures.

4 Allow space for the plant to develop — position the Radican Green with open space around it to accommodate its eventual size. In layouts where it shares space with the Marble Queen Radican, the two complement each other naturally — the solid green providing a calm backdrop that lets the variegated plant's patterning stand out.
