Caridina Shrimp

Crystal Red (CRS) Shrimp

The iconic red-and-white banded Bee shrimp Caridina -- a foundational collector line whose graded pattern of vivid red and clean white has defined the Caridina hobby for decades.

Classic Red and White Banded Pattern Graded SS to SSS Available Foundational Caridina Collector Line Soft Acidic Water Required Intermediate Caridina Breeds in Freshwater

Crystal Red Shrimp (CRS) are the original and most iconic graded Bee shrimp Caridina -- the red-and-white banded line whose combination of vivid red sections and clean white banding launched the modern Caridina collector hobby and established the grading system that all subsequent Bee shrimp lines use. The grading reflects coverage, band definition, colour opacity, and white coverage proportion: lower grades carry more red and narrower white bands; higher grades (SS, SSS) carry more white coverage, bolder and more precisely defined banding, and deeper, more opaque red in the coloured sections. At the highest grades, the red sections are fully opaque and the white sections are bright and clearly defined with sharp edges -- the pattern reads as a high-contrast, graphic alternation of vivid red and clean white that is among the most immediately striking patterns available in the freshwater hobby. Crystal Red and Crystal Black are genetically compatible and are sometimes kept together for visual diversity. Care requires soft, acidic, low-KH water maintained with RO remineralisation and active aquasoil. Safe with all snails.

Pattern, Grade and Behaviour

Vivid red and clean white banding -- the original collector Caridina pattern -- the CRS pattern at its best carries a fully opaque, vivid red in the coloured sections and clean, bright white in the banded sections, with clearly defined edges between the two colour zones. The grading system reflects the completeness of this expression: lower grades have more red coverage, narrower white bands, and less distinct edges; higher grades have more white coverage, bolder bands, and sharper colour boundaries. Grade reflects white coverage, band definition, and colour opacity -- the visual difference between grades is significant and immediately apparent when specimens are viewed side by side. SS and SSS grade animals carry a visually striking, high-contrast pattern; lower grades carry the same genetic foundation with progressively less complete pattern expression. Grade quality is visible at a glance on healthy adults in optimal conditions. Colour is parameter-responsive -- optimal conditions produce the most vivid pattern -- the vivid red and clean white reach their most saturated, most clearly defined expression at the optimal end of the parameter range: pH 6.0-6.5, GH 4-5, KH 0-1, temperature 70-72F. Parameters toward the outer edge of the survivable range produce less vivid red and less bright white than animals in genuinely optimal conditions. The foundational collector Caridina -- extensively documented and well understood -- CRS have been kept and bred in the hobby for longer than any other graded Caridina line. The accumulated knowledge, documentation, and community experience available for CRS care is more extensive than for any other Caridina species -- a meaningful practical advantage for keepers moving from Neocaridina to their first Caridina. Intermediate Caridina difficulty -- the most well-supported starting point for Caridina -- the combination of extensive documentation, well-understood care requirements, and predictable behaviour in well-maintained tanks makes CRS the most practical entry point into Caridina keeping for experienced Neocaridina keepers ready to move to soft, acidic water management. Breeds in freshwater with direct shrimplet release -- females carry clutches for 4-6 weeks and release fully formed miniature CRS into the tank. Dense moss, established biofilm, and parameter stability throughout the brooding period support shrimplet survival.

Getting Started

1Establish soft acidic parameters for two weeks before introduction -- pH 6.0-6.5, GH 4-5, KH 0-2, temperature 70-73F using RO water remineralised with Caridina-specific mineral. Active aquasoil maintains stable low pH. Test daily to confirm stability before introduction.
2Drip acclimate over 60-90 minutes -- float bag for 15 minutes, then drip at one drop per second for 60-90 minutes.
3Dense moss and established biofilm before shrimp arrive -- Java Moss, Christmas Moss, or Taiwan Moss provides biofilm and shrimplet shelter for the first breeding generation.
4Feed sparingly and remove uneaten food within 2-3 hours -- small amounts of high-quality Caridina food every 1-2 days. Consistent removal of uneaten food is important in the low-buffering CRS environment.
Bonus Tip

Crystal Red alongside Crystal Black shrimp in the same tank is the most classic Caridina combination in the hobby -- the two lines share identical care requirements, coexist without conflict, and produce offspring carrying both red-and-white and black-and-white pattern expressions alongside mixed intermediates. The combined colony of vivid red-and-white and deep black-and-white Bee shrimp in a single tank is visually striking in a way that either line alone is not, and the gradual colour diversity that develops across successive mixed-generation offspring adds continued visual interest as the colony matures.
