Plant Weights

Lead-free, reusable weights that hold stem plants and floating plants anchored in substrate -- the simplest solution for plants that won't stay planted.

Holds Stem Plants in Substrate Lead-Free Reusable Works on Any Stem Plant Invisible When Planted Shrimp Safe

Plant weights are small lead-free metal strips that wrap around the base of stem plant bunches or individual stems to hold them anchored in substrate until roots establish. Stem plants shipped bare-root or freshly trimmed have no root system to anchor them and will float free immediately after planting -- plant weights solve this problem without any tools, glue, or substrate manipulation. They are reusable, inert, safe for all shrimp, and completely invisible once the plant base is buried in substrate. Equally useful for anchoring floating plants like Subwassertang or moss balls at a specific depth, or for weighting down any plant that needs to stay in a fixed position while it roots in. A straightforward, low-cost solution that every planted shrimp tank benefits from having on hand.

Uses & Applications

Hold bare-root stem plants in substrate until roots establish -- the primary use case -- stem plants sold as cuttings have no root system. Without weight they float free within minutes of planting, even in fine substrate. A plant weight wrapped around the base of each stem or bunch and pushed into the substrate holds the plant in position for the two to four weeks it takes for roots to develop and anchor naturally. Once rooted the weight can be removed and reused on the next planting, or left in place buried under the substrate where it causes no harm. Anchor moss and floating plants at a fixed position or depth -- plants like Java Moss, Subwassertang, and Foxtail float naturally and can be difficult to position in a specific location. A plant weight attached to a portion of the plant holds it at mid-depth or against a hardscape surface while it establishes. This is particularly useful for creating mid-water moss columns or holding a floating plant cluster in place for photography or aquascaping composition work. Reusable indefinitely -- remove, reshape, and reuse -- plant weights are soft metal strips that can be unwrapped, reshaped, and rewrapped around a new stem as many times as needed. They do not corrode, degrade, or lose effectiveness over time. A small supply of plant weights is a permanent addition to the planted tank toolkit that pays for itself many times over across successive plantings. Completely invisible when planted -- no aesthetic impact -- a plant weight wrapped at the base of a stem and pushed into substrate to just below the surface is completely invisible in the finished layout. There is no visual difference between a weighted plant and an established rooted plant once both are in substrate. The weight does its job without contributing anything to the appearance of the tank. Lead-free and inert -- safe for all shrimp and invertebrates -- older-style plant weights were made from lead, which leaches into the water and is toxic to invertebrates. These weights are lead-free and fully inert -- they do not affect water chemistry, pH, hardness, or any other parameter. Safe for Neocaridina, Caridina, and all snail species without concern.

Application

1Wrap the weight around the base of the stem or bunch -- fold the weight strip around the lowest 1--2cm of the stem or bunch, pressing it snugly against the plant without crushing the stem tissue. For a bunch of multiple stems wrap once around the group. For individual stems fold the strip into a U-shape and press it against both sides of the single stem.
2Push the weighted base into substrate to just below the surface -- use aquarium tweezers or your fingers to push the weighted base of the plant into the substrate until the weight is fully buried and only the stem is visible. In fine substrate the weight holds immediately; in coarser gravel press more firmly to ensure the weight is below the surface level.
3Leave in place until roots establish, then remove and reuse -- check the plant after two to four weeks. Once the plant resists a gentle upward tug it has rooted and the weight can be removed for reuse. If the plant has not yet rooted, leave the weight in place for another week and check again.
Tip

When planting a full background of stem plants, use one weight per stem rather than one per bunch -- individual weighting keeps stems evenly spaced and prevents the bunch from splaying outward as it grows. The few extra minutes spent weighting each stem individually produces a significantly cleaner and more even background planting that requires less correction later.
