The Pink Marble Sword (Echinodorus sp. 'Pink Marble') is a cultivated sword plant valued for its distinctive variegated foliage — broad leaves that emerge with a soft blush pink tone before maturing into a marbled pattern of green, cream, and white. No two leaves are identical, and the patterning shifts naturally with light intensity, nutrient availability, and the plant's growth stage, giving it a visual character that changes subtly over time. As a true Echinodorus, it grows from a central root crown, produces broad structural leaves, and eventually develops into a commanding midground or background specimen. It is fully safe for shrimp, Caridina, and fry, and provides excellent broad-leaf cover that the whole tank benefits from.

What to Expect
Growth & Behavior Over Time
New leaves emerge pink, mature to marbled green and white — the pink coloration is most vivid in young, unfurling leaves and gradually transitions to the characteristic marbled pattern as each leaf matures. The contrast between new and established growth makes the plant particularly visually interesting during active growth phases.
Variegation intensity varies with light and nutrients — stronger lighting tends to produce more defined marbling and brighter pink new growth, while lower light results in softer, greener tones. Iron and micronutrient availability also influence how richly the pink pigmentation develops.
Grows from a central crown — do not bury it — like all Echinodorus, the Pink Marble Sword grows from a central rosette crown that must remain above the substrate. Burying the crown will cause the plant to rot from the center outward.
Develops into a substantial specimen over time — given adequate space, nutrients, and light, this sword will grow into a broad, multi-leafed plant that anchors the midground or background of medium to large aquariums with genuine structural presence.
Propagates via runners — mature plants produce horizontal runners that develop small plantlets at intervals. These can be left attached until they develop their own roots, then separated and replanted elsewhere in the tank.
Broad leaves accumulate biofilm — the wide leaf surface develops biofilm over time that shrimp and snails graze on consistently, making this plant a functional as well as visual addition to any community setup.

Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate — Echinodorus are heavy root feeders. A nutrient-rich or enriched substrate gives the plant direct access to the macros and micros it needs to establish quickly and produce strong, well-pigmented growth.

Keep the crown above the substrate — plant deep enough for the roots to anchor firmly, but ensure the central growing point remains fully exposed above the substrate surface. Even partial burial of the crown will lead to rot over time.

Provide medium lighting and dose iron regularly — medium intensity light supports healthy growth and good variegation. Regular iron and micronutrient dosing is the most direct way to intensify the pink tones in new growth and maintain the crispness of the marble patterning.

Allow space to grow — the Pink Marble Sword will spread outward as it matures. Plant it with enough clear space around it to accommodate its eventual footprint, particularly in smaller aquariums where it can quickly dominate the layout if not positioned thoughtfully.
💡 Bonus Tip
If the plant produces runners with plantlets, resist the urge to separate them too early — wait until each plantlet has developed at least four to five leaves and visible roots of its own before detaching it from the parent runner. Early separation leads to slow, struggling transplants; patient separation leads to strong, independently rooted plants.
