Pearl Moss

Fine-textured, brilliantly green, and built to pearl — a stem plant that thinks it's a moss.

Easy to Moderate Medium to High Light CO₂ Not Required Foreground & Midground Use Shrimp & Fry Shelter Nano & Nature Aquascape

Pearl Moss (Micranthemum micranthemoides) is one of those plants that looks more complex than it actually is to keep. Despite the name, it's a stem plant — not a true moss — but its small rounded leaves and dense, compact branching give it a soft, cushion-like texture that blends naturally into aquascapes alongside freshwater snails, Neocaridina, and Caridina shrimp. Under good light and stable conditions, it produces the oxygen bubbles along its leaves that inspired its common name — a "pearling" effect that's genuinely satisfying to watch.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

Moss-like texture, stem plant growth — the small, rounded leaves and compact branching mimic the look of true moss while still responding to trimming and shaping like a stem plant. Versatile placement — works as a trimmed foreground carpet, a rounded midground mound, or tied and attached to hardscape for a natural cluster effect. Visible pearling under good light — with sufficient lighting and stable conditions, tiny oxygen bubbles form along the leaves during peak photosynthesis, creating the "pearling" effect the plant is named for. CO₂ significantly improves performance — not required, but supplementation noticeably increases growth speed, leaf density, and overall compactness of the plant. Dense cover for shrimp and fry — the tight structure provides excellent shelter and accumulates biofilm on its surfaces, making it a naturally enriching addition to shrimp tanks. Leggy without regular trimming — left unchecked, stems will grow upward rather than outward; consistent trimming keeps growth full, low, and lush.

Getting Started

1 Plant in small bunches — separate stems and plant individually or in tight clusters in a fine substrate, leaving space between groups to allow horizontal spread as the plant fills in.
2 Provide medium to high lighting — Pearl Moss needs sufficient light to stay compact and produce its signature pearling effect. Lower light will result in slower, leggier growth.
3 Add CO₂ if possible — while not required, even a basic CO₂ setup will noticeably improve growth rate, leaf density, and the overall quality of the plant over time.
4 Trim frequently and low — regular light trimming redirects growth outward, encouraging Pearl Moss to form dense cushions or carpets rather than growing tall and sparse.
💡 Bonus Tip

Frequent light trimming encourages Pearl Moss to grow outward instead of upward, helping it form lush cushions or carpets rather than tall stems. The cuttings can also be replanted immediately to fill in gaps faster.
