Orange Eye Fire Red Shrimp combine the familiar red body of Fire Red Neocaridina with a striking orange-eyed appearance. The contrast is especially noticeable as they turn and graze across moss, driftwood and plant leaves. They bring both colour and close-up detail to a planted aquarium, making them an appealing choice for keepers who enjoy watching a colony as much as the overall tank display.

These are Neocaridina shrimp, with the same basic care approach as other cherry shrimp varieties: a mature freshwater aquarium, stable mineral levels and plenty of established grazing surfaces. A dedicated colony is the best way to observe their behaviour and keep this colour line separate from other Neocaridina.

What to Expect

Orange Eyes, Red Colour and Colony Life

A distinctive eye colour. Orange eyes give this variety a different expression from familiar dark-eyed red shrimp. Look for the detail when the shrimp faces you or pauses on a leaf near the front glass. Natural variation in red coverage. Body colour and opacity vary between individuals and with age, sex and condition. Juveniles and males may show less dense red coverage than mature females. The Fire Red name does not mean every shrimp will have the uniform coverage associated with Painted Fire Red. Peaceful, active grazing. They spend much of their time picking at biofilm and soft growth on plants and hardscape. Moss and other fine cover offer places to forage and shelter. Fish may eat shrimplets, so choose tankmates carefully if breeding is a priority. Freshwater breeding. Females carry eggs beneath their abdomen and release miniature shrimp. Keep this line separate from other Neocaridina varieties if you want to preserve its appearance. Offspring can vary; a fixed percentage of orange-eyed or high-colour young is not promised.

How to Set It Up

Getting Started

1Prepare a mature aquarium. Confirm zero ammonia and nitrite before introducing shrimp. Established plants, moss and biofilm provide grazing areas from the start. Choose substrate for stable water chemistry as well as appearance.

2Acclimate gradually. Allow temperatures to equalise, then introduce small amounts of aquarium water gradually. Avoid abrupt changes in temperature or mineral content, and keep conditions steady after introduction.

3Provide shelter and gentle filtration. Fine-leaved plants and moss give shrimp cover while moulting and help young shrimp find food. A sponge filter or a protected filter intake helps keep shrimplets out of the filter.

4Feed small portions and observe. Supplement natural grazing with a suitable shrimp food. Adjust portions to the colony's appetite and remove uneaten food before it fouls the water. Regular, modest maintenance is better than sudden large adjustments.

Bonus Tip

Place a small moss-covered stone near the front of the aquarium. It creates an inviting grazing spot where you can appreciate the orange eyes at close range. Dark, neutral surroundings help the red bodies stand out without needing brighter lighting.
