Marble Queen Radican Sword

Bold white and green marbled leaves on a large, long-lived Echinodorus — one of the most dramatic specimen plants in the hobby.

White & Green Variegation Large Specimen Plant CO₂ Optional Medium Light Shrimp & Fry Safe Background Centerpiece

The Marble Queen Radican Sword (Echinodorus grisebachii 'Marble Queen') is one of the most visually commanding planted tank specimens available — a large, long-lived Echinodorus that produces broad, lance-shaped leaves with bold white and green marbling that is more pronounced and high-contrast than most other variegated sword cultivars. The 'Radican' growth form means the plant stays more compact and upright than some larger sword species, making it manageable in medium to large aquariums without dominating the entire layout. As with all Echinodorus, it roots deeply, feeds heavily from the substrate, and grows into an increasingly impressive specimen over time. Fully safe for shrimp, Caridina, and fry, and a natural anchor for any planted midground or background.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

Bold white and green marbling across broad leaves — the variegation on the Marble Queen is high-contrast and irregular, with large areas of white and cream breaking up the green across each leaf. No two leaves are identical, and the pattern shifts with each new growth flush, giving the plant a constantly evolving visual character. Variegation clarity improves with light and nutrients — stronger medium lighting and consistent fertilization produces cleaner, more distinct marbling with brighter white areas. Insufficient light or nutrients tends to push the plant toward greener, less clearly patterned growth over time. Radican form stays more compact than standard sword cultivars — the 'Radican' growth habit produces shorter, more upright petioles than many large Echinodorus, keeping the plant manageable in tanks from around 20 gallons upward. It will still become a substantial plant — plan space accordingly. Crown must remain above the substrate — like all Echinodorus, the central rosette crown must sit fully above the substrate surface at all times. Even partial burial leads to rot spreading through the growing point, which is the most common cause of failure with sword plants after planting. Propagates via runners and adventitious plantlets — mature plants produce long runners that develop plantlets at intervals. Allow each plantlet to establish at least four to five leaves and visible roots before separating from the parent runner for reliable transplanting results. Broad leaves develop biofilm over time — the large leaf surface accumulates biofilm that shrimp and snails graze on continuously, making this plant a functional contribution to the tank ecosystem as well as a visual one.

Getting Started

1 Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate — Echinodorus are heavy root feeders. A fertile or enriched substrate gives the plant direct access to the macros and micros it needs to establish quickly and push strong, well-patterned growth from the start. Root tabs are an effective supplement in inert substrates.
2 Keep the crown above the substrate — plant with enough depth for firm root anchoring but ensure the central growing point remains fully visible above the substrate surface. This is the most important planting step for any Echinodorus and the most commonly overlooked.
3 Provide medium lighting and dose fertilizer consistently — medium intensity light supports healthy growth and maintains the clarity and contrast of the white variegation. A balanced liquid fertilizer routine covering macros and micros sustains the plant's considerable nutritional demands as it matures.
4 Position with space to develop — the Marble Queen Radican Sword will spread broadly as it matures. Place it in the midground or background with enough clear space on all sides to accommodate the plant's eventual footprint without crowding neighboring plants or hardscape.
💡 Bonus Tip

The Marble Queen pairs exceptionally well with dark-leafed or fine-textured plants — the bold white and green marbling creates the strongest visual contrast against deep green mosses, dark Anubias, or fine-leafed stem plants, making each element of the layout stand out more clearly than it would in a single-texture planting.
