Lemon Bacopa

A compact stem plant with small rounded leaves that develop a warm yellow-green to lemon tone under high light — a well-behaved, slow-to-medium-growing midground plant with a reliably warm leaf colour.

Warm Yellow-Green Leaf Colour Small Rounded Leaves Compact Bushy Growth Lightly Lemon-Scented When Trimmed No CO₂ Required Medium to High Light

Lemon Bacopa (Bacopa caroliniana) is a compact stem plant with small, rounded, opposite leaves that produce a warm yellow-green to lemon-yellow tone under adequate light — a colour in the warm green spectrum that is distinct from the cool bright greens of fast stem plants and the deep rich greens of Anubias and Buce, providing a midground colour contribution that reads as warm and slightly luminous. Above the waterline the plant has a faint but pleasant lemon fragrance when leaves are broken — the characteristic that gives it its common name and that makes trimming sessions mildly aromatic rather than purely functional. Growth is compact and branching rather than aggressively upright — Lemon Bacopa produces a naturally bushier form than most stem plants and requires less frequent trimming to maintain a neat midground presence. The yellow-green colour is most vivid under medium to high light with iron supplementation; under low light the leaves are more plainly green. Fully safe with all Neocaridina, Caridina, and snails.

Colour, Growth & Behaviour

Warm yellow-green to lemon tone under adequate light — the characteristic warm yellow-green colour of Lemon Bacopa is most vivid under medium to high light with consistent iron supplementation — a warm, slightly luminous tone that catches available light differently from cooler greens and reads clearly as distinct in a layout where most plants are deeper or cooler in their greens. Under low light the leaves are more uniformly green and the warm tone is less apparent; under high light with iron the lemon quality of the colour is most strongly expressed on new growth. Compact, naturally bushy growth form with regular branching — unlike aggressively upright stem plants that shoot straight toward the surface between trimmings, Lemon Bacopa branches readily at each internodal point as it grows, producing a naturally denser, more compact form that maintains a tidy midground presence with less intervention. This makes it one of the lower-maintenance stem plants in the catalog — trimming every six to eight weeks rather than the two to four week cycle that fast-growing species require. Small rounded leaves with a slightly succulent, firm texture — each leaf is small — 1–2cm across — broadly oval to rounded, carried in opposite pairs, and has a slightly firm, fleshy texture that holds its form when wet. The leaf surface is smooth and slightly glossy, giving the warm yellow-green colour a clean, undistracted quality without the surface variation that adds interest to the leaves of textured species like Cryptocorynes or Bucephalandra. Lightly lemon-scented when trimmed — a pleasant bonus — breaking or trimming the leaves and stems of Lemon Bacopa releases a faint but distinctly pleasant lemon fragrance — an incidental quality that does not affect tank chemistry or inhabitant health but that makes maintenance of this plant noticeably more enjoyable than trimming unscented species. The scent is strongest from the stems and freshly cut surfaces. Differentiates from Purple Bacopa on colour temperature — Lemon and Purple Bacopa are the same species and share identical form, care, and growth rate. Lemon produces warm yellow-green tones; Purple produces cool violet-purple tones under high light. The two are the most complementary pairing in the stem plant section of the catalog — same maintenance, maximum colour contrast.

Getting Started

1Plant in groups of five or more in the midground — strip the lowest 3cm of leaves and plant at 2–3cm spacing in a group. Five or more stems planted together produce an immediately coherent warm-toned midground mass. Position where the warm yellow-green colour is visible against cooler or darker background plants.
2Medium to high light for the warmest colour expression — under low light Lemon Bacopa grows and stays healthy but the warm yellow-green tone is muted. Medium light produces a reliable warm green; high light with iron produces the most distinctly lemon-yellow new growth. Adjust light intensity to the level where the colour reads as distinct from surrounding plants.
3Dose iron consistently for colour maintenance — liquid fertiliser with iron dosed two to three times weekly from the start maintains the warm colour on new growth and prevents the pale, yellowish-green of iron deficiency that could be confused with the intentional warm tone of healthy Lemon Bacopa. Healthy warm yellow-green is even and present on fully developed leaves; deficiency shows as uneven yellowing concentrated between veins on newer leaves.
4Trim every six to eight weeks and replant tops — cut stems at the desired height and replant the top 8–10cm cuttings in the same group after stripping the lowest leaves. The original stems branch from the cut points. The natural branching habit of Bacopa means the group becomes progressively fuller and denser with each trimming cycle without growing taller — the opposite of what happens with fast, upright stem plants.
💡 Bonus Tip

Lemon Bacopa planted directly in front of a group of dark-toned Bucephalandra or Anubias barteri on driftwood creates a warm-cool contrast at the midground level that is different in character from the dramatic contrast of red stem plants against green — the warm yellow-green of Lemon Bacopa against the cool deep green or dark iridescence of the Buce or Anubias is softer and more naturalistic than the warm-red against cool-green pairing, which makes it better suited to layouts aiming for an understated, habitat-authentic aesthetic rather than a deliberately contrasting aquascape style.
