A uniquely structured aquatic plant with deeply lobed, oak-leaf shaped leaves in brown-green on top and vivid purple-red underneath. Unlike any other Hygrophila -- grows as a stem plant, a midground epiphyte, or a creeping horizontal runner depending on how it is positioned.

Hygrophila pinnatifida is one of the most distinctive and most versatile aquatic plants available in the hobby. It is native to India and is the only Hygrophila species with deeply lobed, pinnately divided leaves -- a structure that gives each leaf an oak-leaf or feather-like silhouette entirely unlike the broad, simple leaves of other Hygrophila species. The upper leaf surface is a warm brown-green to olive tone; the underside is a vivid purple to red-purple that is visible from the side and below as the leaves extend outward. What makes the plant particularly unusual is its growth flexibility -- it can be planted in substrate as a stem plant growing upward, attached to driftwood or hardscape as an epiphyte spreading horizontally, or left to creep along the substrate surface producing a low, spreading carpet-like effect. In any of these modes it produces runners and side shoots that colonise available surfaces over time, making it one of the most self-sufficient plants in the hobby once established. CO2 improves growth rate and intensifies the leaf colour but the plant is viable without it. Safe with all Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp.

Lobed Leaves, Purple Underside, Three Growth Modes

Deeply lobed oak-leaf shaped leaves -- unique among Hygrophila and most aquatic plants. The pinnately divided leaf structure of H. pinnatifida is the species' most immediately distinctive characteristic. Each leaf is divided along the central midrib into clearly separated lobes, producing a shape that reads as more closely related to a fern or oak leaf than to the broad, simple leaves associated with the Hygrophila genus. This unusual leaf form creates significant visual texture and interest -- the lobed leaves catch light differently at different angles and cast complex shadows on the hardscape and substrate beneath them. Brown-green upper surface with vivid purple-red underside -- a two-colour leaf character unlike any other common aquatic plant. The upper surface of the leaves is a warm brown-green to olive, and the underside is a vivid purple to red-purple. Both surfaces are visible simultaneously in a tank as leaves extend outward at various angles, and the shifting combination of warm brown-green and purple as the plant is viewed from different positions gives it a dynamic colour character that changes depending on viewing angle and light direction. The purple underside is most vivid under CO2 supplementation and in moderate light. Three growth modes -- stem, epiphyte, or creeping ground cover -- depending on placement. This growth flexibility is one of the most practically useful characteristics of the species. Planted upright in substrate it grows as a stem plant. Attached to driftwood or stone by the rhizome it spreads horizontally across the hardscape surface as an epiphyte. Placed horizontally on the substrate it creeps along the bottom, producing a low spreading cover. In all three modes it produces runners and side shoots that extend the plant's reach over time without any intervention. Produces runners and side shoots that colonise available surfaces progressively. Once established, H. pinnatifida spreads through a combination of stem branching, side shoot production, and runner extension. A single stem planted in substrate will produce lateral branches and runners that root into the surrounding substrate or attach to nearby hardscape. On driftwood the plant progressively covers more surface area as new shoots extend from the original attachment point. This self-spreading behaviour makes it one of the most self-sufficient midground plants available. CO2 improves growth rate and intensifies the purple underside colour -- viable without it. Without CO2 the plant grows more slowly and the purple underside is somewhat less vivid, trending toward a more muted reddish-brown. With CO2 the growth rate increases meaningfully and the purple colouration reaches its most saturated expression. Iron and micronutrient supplementation further enhances the colour quality of both the upper and lower leaf surfaces.

Planting & Placement

1Choose your growth mode before planting. If planting in substrate, insert the stem upright with roots into the substrate and crown just above the surface. If attaching to hardscape, press the rhizome or stem base against rough driftwood or stone and secure with cotton thread or super glue gel. If creating a ground cover, lay stems horizontally across the substrate and allow the nodes to root downward. Each approach produces a different final form.
2For hardscape attachment, use rough-surfaced driftwood or stone for the best hold. The plant attaches most readily to textured surfaces. Spider Wood, Dragon Wood, and rough stone all provide good attachment surfaces. Secure with cotton thread at multiple points and allow four to six weeks for the natural attachment to develop before removing the thread.
3Trim side shoots and runners periodically to control spread and shape. Once the plant is established it spreads actively. Trim runners and side shoots as needed to maintain the desired size and shape. Trimmed portions can be replanted elsewhere in the tank or attached to additional hardscape pieces to extend the plant's presence across more of the aquascape.
4Dose iron and micronutrients consistently for best colour. The warm brown-green of the upper leaves and the purple of the underside both respond to iron and micronutrient availability. Consistent two to three times weekly liquid fertilisation with a full micronutrient profile produces more vivid and more consistent colour than intermittent dosing.

Hygrophila pinnatifida attached to a piece of Spider Wood in the midground of a shrimp tank, with the lobed leaves extending outward and the purple undersides visible from the front, is one of the most compositionally interesting single plant-and-hardscape combinations available at any price point. The oak-leaf structure, the two-colour leaf character, and the way the plant progressively colonises the wood over months creates a naturalistic overgrown appearance that most aquatic plants cannot replicate. Pair with a bright green foreground plant like Java Moss or Dwarf Hairgrass and the warm brown-purple of the pinnatifida reads as a rich, complex midground against the bright green foreground.
