Floating Plant Rings

A simple ring of floating material that corrals floating plants into a defined surface zone — the cleanest and most effective way to keep floating plants away from filter intakes and in the exact positions you want.

Keeps Floating Plants in Place Prevents Filter Intake Clogging Defines Surface Zones Adjustable to Any Size Works with All Floating Plants Easy to Install

Floating Plant Rings are a simple, practical accessory that solves the most persistent problem with floating plants: they go wherever the current takes them rather than where you want them. In tanks with any surface flow — which is most tanks — floating plants migrate constantly, bunching up against filter intakes, covering one side of the surface completely while leaving the other bare, and requiring regular manual repositioning that undoes itself within hours. A floating plant ring creates a defined corral on the surface that keeps plants within a set zone regardless of current, protects filter intakes from plant accumulation, and allows the layout to include floating plant coverage in specific, intentional positions rather than wherever the flow happens to push them. They work with all floating plants in the catalog — Frogbit, Water Lettuce, Red Root Floaters, Salvinia, Water Spangles, and Pennywort in trailing mode — and require no ongoing maintenance beyond occasional repositioning as plants grow and fill the ring.

Function & Benefits

Define a fixed surface zone for floating plants regardless of current — the ring floats on the surface and creates a physical barrier that keeps floating plants within its circumference. Current pushes against the ring itself rather than the plants inside it — the ring moves slightly with flow but the plants stay within it. The result is a defined, stable floating plant zone that stays where placed without daily repositioning. Protect filter intakes from plant accumulation — floating plants migrating to filter intake positions is one of the most common maintenance problems in planted shrimp tanks — plants caught against the intake restrict flow, starve the filter of water, and create a trap that accumulates debris. A floating ring positioned to keep plants away from the intake area eliminates this problem entirely without reducing the number of floating plants in the tank. Allow floating plants in tanks with moderate surface flow — floating plants require calm water to thrive — strong surface agitation damages leaves and prevents the air film that keeps them buoyant. A floating ring does not eliminate surface flow but concentrates plants in the ring where flow is reduced by the ring structure itself, allowing floating plants to be kept in tanks with moderate surface movement that would otherwise be too agitated for them. Create intentional layout composition at the surface — without rings, floating plant coverage is determined by physics rather than design. With rings, the surface becomes part of the planned layout — a ring of Frogbit in the front-left corner and a ring of Red Root Floaters in the back-right creates a deliberate surface composition that stays in place and can be positioned to maximise the dappled light effect over specific planting zones below. Compatible with all floating plant species in the catalog — works with Frogbit, Water Lettuce, Salvinia natans, Water Spangles, Red Root Floaters, and Pennywort in its surface-trailing growth mode. Works equally well for breeding setups where Guppy Grass or Water Sprite cuttings need to be kept in a defined area rather than drifting freely.

Setup & Placement

1Place ring on the surface in the desired floating plant zone — lower the ring onto the water surface and position it in the area where you want floating plant coverage. In most tanks the ideal position is front-centre or front-side where the floating plant canopy is visible from the viewing angle and the dappled light it creates falls over the foreground planting zone.
2Introduce floating plants inside the ring — add your floating plants directly inside the ring after it is positioned. The ring immediately prevents plants from migrating to the intake or opposite side of the tank. For species that spread rapidly — Salvinia, Water Spangles — the ring also makes thinning straightforward: simply remove excess plants from inside the ring during water changes without having to chase them across the tank.
3Position to protect filter intake — if filter intake clogging is the primary concern, place a second ring around the intake area with no plants inside it — an exclusion zone rather than a planting zone — or position the planting ring on the opposite side of the tank from the intake with the flow moving plants toward the ring rather than the intake.
4Thin plants regularly inside the ring as they multiply — as floating plants spread and fill the ring, remove excess plants to maintain 60–70% surface coverage inside the ring rather than a solid mat. This preserves light penetration to plants below and prevents the interior of the ring from becoming so dense that air exchange is reduced for the plants at the centre.
💡 Bonus Tip

A floating plant ring is the single most effective way to keep Red Root Floaters in the position where their colour is most visible and their roots most clearly seen — positioned near the front glass with the ring against the glass, the trailing red roots are visible from the side and the reddened leaf canopy is presented to direct overhead light at its maximum intensity. Without a ring, Red Root Floaters drift to wherever current takes them and the careful positioning that maximises their visual impact is impossible to maintain.
