Fire Red Cherry Shrimp are a red colour variety of Neocaridina davidi. Fire Red generally has strong red coverage across the body, while Painted Fire Red is selected for denser, more even coverage extending onto the legs. These are colour grades of the same species, not different care categories.

Grade, Colour and Behaviour
Fire Red versus Painted Fire Red: Painted Fire Red is generally the higher-opacity grade. Fire Red can show lighter or translucent areas, especially on the legs.
Natural variation: sex, age and condition affect appearance. Males and juveniles can be less intensely coloured than mature females; grading terminology varies between breeders.
Breeding for colour: keep colour lines separate and select breeding stock thoughtfully. Offspring vary, so stronger colour is not guaranteed with every generation.
How to Set It Up
Getting Started
1Dark substrate and stable parameters before introduction -- black aquasoil or dark sand, pH 7.0-7.4, GH 6-8, KH 3-5, temperature 72-75F. Use a mature, fully cycled aquarium with established biofilm. Confirm zero ammonia and nitrite and stable water parameters before adding shrimp; one week of running time alone does not establish that a new tank is ready.
2Drip acclimate over 45-60 minutes -- float bag for 15 minutes to temperature-equalise, then drip tank water at one drop per second for 45-60 minutes before release.
3Dense moss and established biofilm surfaces before shrimp arrive -- Java Moss, Christmas Moss, or Flame Moss provides biofilm foraging and shrimplet shelter from the first breeding cycle.
4Feed varied diet and observe colony appetite as a health indicator -- comprehensive sinking food every one to two days, remove uneaten portions within two hours. Consistent appetite across the full colony is a reliable indicator of good overall health.
Bonus Tip
For a red shrimp display, combine a planted, mature aquarium with contrasting hardscape and plenty of cover. Choose your substrate for stable water chemistry as well as appearance.
