Driftwood is the single hardscape element that does more functional work in a planted shrimp tank than anything else. It provides the structure that Anubias, Bucephalandra, Java Fern, and mosses attach to and grow across over months and years. It releases tannins and humic acids that soften water, lower pH incrementally in low-KH tanks, and produce the amber-tinted water quality that Caridina and blackwater species thrive in. Its surface develops a persistent biofilm that Neocaridina, Caridina, and snails graze continuously. Its physical form — varied, irregular, and unique to each piece — provides the visual foundation and sense of natural depth that aquascape layouts are built around. No synthetic decoration replicates what a well-chosen piece of driftwood does across all of these functions simultaneously. Each piece sold is individual and will vary in size, shape, and character — photographs are representative of typical pieces from the current stock.

What Driftwood Does in Your Tank

Releases tannins and humic acids gradually over time — all driftwood leaches tannins and humic acids into the water after submersion, producing an amber water tint and contributing to softer, mildly more acidic water chemistry. The release is heaviest in the first weeks and tapers over months as the wood fully conditions. In tanks with low KH the pH contribution is measurable; in well-buffered tanks the tannins are absorbed without affecting pH. Activated carbon removes the tint while leaving the wood's structural value intact. Develops biofilm across all surfaces from the first days — the porous, organic surface of driftwood begins accumulating biofilm almost immediately after submersion. Shrimp and snails graze this biofilm persistently and visibly — driftwood surfaces are among the most actively foraged areas in any shrimp tank. Established pieces with months of biofilm accumulation are among the most valuable foraging resources in the tank. The primary attachment surface for epiphytic plantsBucephalandra, Anubias, Java Fern, Windelov Fern, and all aquarium mosses attach to driftwood naturally over time and can be fixed in position immediately with thread or super glue gel. A single piece of driftwood planted with multiple epiphytes becomes increasingly impressive over months as roots grip the wood, rhizomes spread, and plants fill their natural positions — the combination of wood and plants improving together in the same space is one of the most rewarding long-term experiences in the hobby. White fungal bloom is common, harmless, and temporary — a white, fuzzy fungal or bacterial growth frequently appears on newly submerged driftwood within the first one to two weeks. This is a normal part of the wood conditioning process, completely harmless to shrimp and inhabitants, and disappears on its own within two to four weeks. Shrimp graze it actively throughout its duration. Leave it undisturbed — manual removal simply triggers regrowth. May float initially before becoming fully waterlogged — air trapped within the wood structure causes many pieces to float or sit unevenly when first submerged. A period of soaking in a bucket before placing in the tank resolves this for most pieces. For pieces that remain buoyant even after soaking, anchoring to a slate base with stainless steel screws, or weighting with a flat stone across the base, holds the position while the wood fully waterloggs over subsequent weeks. Each piece is unique and will vary from photographs — driftwood is a natural product and no two pieces are identical in shape, branching, color, or surface character. Variation in form, tone, and proportions is inherent to the product and part of its value.

Getting Started

1 Soak before placing in the tank — submerge the piece in a bucket of water for three to seven days before adding to the aquarium. This waterloggs the wood so it sinks reliably, allows the heaviest initial tannin flush to occur outside the tank, and begins softening the surface so biofilm establishes quickly once the wood is in place. Change the soaking water once or twice during the process to clear the initial tannin burst.
2 Attach plants before placing in the tank — secure Bucephalandra, Anubias, moss, or Java Fern to the wood with cotton thread or a small amount of super glue gel while the piece is accessible outside the tank. Attaching plants to wood in hand is considerably easier than working inside a planted aquarium, and placing a pre-planted piece produces an immediately more complete-looking result than bare wood left to be planted in situ.
3 Position to create depth and shadow — driftwood's naturalistic value comes as much from the shadow and depth it creates as from its physical presence. Place the piece at an angle rather than flat against the back glass, and allow it to extend into the midground where its profile creates visual layers when viewed from the front. A piece positioned with intent — oriented so its most interesting features face outward and its form creates a sense of depth — contributes far more to the layout than a piece placed arbitrarily.
4 Leave the fungal bloom alone — if white fuzzy growth appears on the wood surface in the first weeks, resist the urge to scrub or remove it. Shrimp will graze it continuously and it clears on its own within two to four weeks as the wood finishes conditioning. Increased flow across the wood surface accelerates the process. The bloom is a reliable sign that the wood is actively conditioning and that biofilm will follow once it clears.
💡 Bonus Tip

Driftwood chosen with a clear orientation — a defined front, a natural base, a direction the branches or grain point toward — produces layouts that look intentional rather than accidental. Before soaking, spend a few minutes turning the piece to find the angle at which it reads most naturally and making a note of that orientation. A piece positioned consistently with how it wants to sit will look right from day one and better every month after as plants grow into and around it.
