The Chocolate Marble Sword (Echinodorus sp. 'Chocolate Marble') is a cultivated sword plant that earns its name from the deep chocolate-brown and bronze tones that define its new growth. As leaves mature they develop into a rich marbled pattern of green, brown, and amber — warmer and more earthy in character than the pink and white tones of other marble sword variants, and particularly effective against dark substrates and natural driftwood layouts. Like all Echinodorus it grows from a central root crown, roots deeply into the substrate, and develops over time into a full, commanding specimen that anchors the layout with genuine weight and presence. Fully safe with shrimp, Caridina, and fry, and a natural pairing with botanicals and earthy hardscape setups.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

New leaves emerge deep chocolate-brown — the richest coloration appears in young, unfurling growth where the brown and bronze tones are most saturated. As each leaf matures it transitions into the marbled green-brown pattern the cultivar is known for, creating a constant interplay of tones across the plant at any given time. Marbling intensifies with iron and strong light — the warmth and definition of the marbled patterning responds directly to iron and micronutrient availability. Regular dosing alongside medium to medium-high lighting produces the deepest, most defined leaf coloration this cultivar is capable of. Grows from a central crown — do not bury it — the central rosette crown must remain above the substrate at all times. Burying it even partially will cause rot to set in from the growing point outward, which is the most common cause of Echinodorus loss after planting. Becomes a substantial specimen over time — with adequate space, nutrients, and light, the Chocolate Marble Sword grows into a broad, multi-leafed plant with real structural presence. It works best as a solo centerpiece or anchor plant in medium to large aquariums. Propagates via runners — established plants send out horizontal runners that produce plantlets at intervals. Allow each plantlet to develop at least four to five leaves and visible roots before separating it from the parent runner for best results. Pairs naturally with dark, earthy aesthetics — the warm brown and bronze tones complement dragon wood, spiderwood, and natural stone layouts particularly well, and work cohesively alongside botanicals and other warm-toned aquascape elements.

2 Keep the crown above the substrate — plant deep enough for firm root anchoring, but ensure the central growing point sits fully above the substrate surface. Even slight burial of the crown leads to rot over time and is the most preventable cause of failure with this species.

3 Dose iron and micronutrients consistently — iron availability has the most direct influence on the depth and warmth of the chocolate and bronze tones. A regular fertilizer routine covering both macros and micros, with emphasis on iron, produces the richest and most defined marbling this cultivar can achieve.

4 Give it room to develop — plan for the plant's eventual size when choosing its position. A mature Chocolate Marble Sword spreads broadly and becomes a dominant element of the layout — this is a feature, not a problem, but it requires thoughtful placement from the beginning.
