Ceramic Plant Rings

Porous ceramic rings used to anchor stem plant cuttings at the substrate surface — the cleanest and most effective method for planting and replanting stem plants without disturbing the substrate.

Anchors Stem Plants Cleanly Porous Ceramic — Inert & Safe No Substrate Disturbance Reusable Indefinitely Accumulates Beneficial Bacteria Works with All Stem Plants

Ceramic Plant Rings are small, porous ceramic rings used to secure stem plant cuttings at the substrate surface — providing a stable anchor that holds plants upright without the need to push stems into the substrate, disturb established root systems, or use anything that degrades over time. In planted shrimp tanks, stem plant maintenance — trimming and replanting cut stems — is one of the most disruptive regular maintenance tasks, stirring substrate, uprooting neighbouring plants, and releasing trapped debris into the water column. Ceramic rings eliminate the substrate disturbance entirely: a cutting is inserted through the ring and both are lowered to the substrate surface, where the ceramic weight holds the stem in position while roots develop and anchor the plant naturally. The porous ceramic is completely inert, does not affect water chemistry, and develops a surface coating of beneficial bacteria over time that contributes to the biological filtration capacity of the tank. Reusable indefinitely — remove a cutting once it has rooted, reuse the ring for the next planting cycle.

Function & Benefits

Anchor stem plant cuttings without substrate disturbance — insert a trimmed stem cutting through the ring and lower both to the substrate surface. The ceramic weight holds the cutting upright and in position while it develops roots — no pushing into substrate, no disturbing established root systems nearby, no debris cloud from substrate agitation. For tanks with established foreground carpets or fine substrate that distributes easily, this benefit is significant. Porous ceramic is completely inert — no water chemistry impact — unglazed ceramic is chemically neutral in aquarium use and does not leach anything into the water column. It is safe for all freshwater livestock including sensitive Caridina shrimp in soft, acidic water where any leaching material would be immediately apparent in parameter testing. The rings can be boiled to clean between uses without any risk of contamination. Porous surface accumulates beneficial bacteria over time — the micro-porous surface of unglazed ceramic provides a very high surface area relative to the ring's volume — the same property that makes ceramic rings effective biological filter media. Rings that have been in the tank for several weeks accumulate a bacterial colony that contributes to the biological filtration load, making them a net positive rather than neutral addition to the tank ecosystem. Reusable indefinitely — remove once rooted, reuse for next cutting — once a stem plant has developed sufficient roots to hold itself in position — typically two to four weeks — the ceramic ring can be carefully removed and set aside for the next trimming cycle. A set of rings used across multiple trimming cycles becomes a permanent part of the stem plant maintenance toolkit rather than a consumable. Boil between uses if concerned about cross-contamination between tank setups. Works with all stem plants in the catalog — compatible with Pennywort, Water Sprite, Anacharis Najas, Guppy Grass, Willow Hygro, Bacopa varieties, and any other stem plant that is planted as individual cuttings at the substrate surface. Works equally well for weighted-float use with plants like Anacharis Najas that are sometimes kept as mid-water tangles — the ring adds enough weight to hold a loose stem bundle at a specific depth without full substrate planting.

Setup & Use

1Trim stem plant cutting and strip lower leaves — cut the stem plant at the desired length — typically 10–15cm — and strip leaves from the bottom 3–4cm of the cutting. The bare stem section is what sits inside and below the ring; the leafy portion extends upward above it.
2Thread the bare stem end through the ring — insert the stripped end of the stem through the ceramic ring so the ring rests at the base of the leafy section and the bare stem hangs below it. The ring should sit snugly against the lowest remaining leaves rather than sliding freely up and down the stem.
3Lower to the substrate surface in the desired position — place the ring-and-stem unit on the substrate surface at the intended planting position. The ceramic weight holds the ring flat and the stem upright. Position with tweezers for precision in tightly planted areas without disturbing adjacent plants or carpet.
4Remove ring once roots are established — after two to four weeks roots will have developed sufficiently to hold the plant without the ring. Carefully slide the ring off the now-rooted stem by lifting slightly and rotating — the new root system is delicate at this stage and rough removal may disturb the plant. Set the ring aside for reuse.
💡 Bonus Tip

Ceramic plant rings used during an initial tank setup — before substrate is established and before any livestock is introduced — produce the cleanest and most debris-free replanting experience possible. Plant the full layout using rings, allow two to three weeks for initial rooting, then remove the rings before introducing shrimp and other livestock. The substrate remains undisturbed throughout the establishment period and the water stays clear during the sensitive initial cycling phase when any debris release is most problematic.

Policies & Disclaimers

Check fit, included parts and intended use, with practical guidance for aquarium accessories and shipping supplies.

Size, fit & what is included

Check the selected option, dimensions and quantity in the listing before ordering. A net’s shape, a dish’s footprint, a filter’s height and a holder’s opening can matter as much as the aquarium’s stated volume. Measure the space where the item will be used, including access around lids, equipment and hardscape.

Photographs show the product and examples of its use. Plants, moss, food, livestock, airline, pumps and other display items are included only when the listing explicitly says they are. A stand or holder is not automatically supplied with the item it holds.

Compare the actual selection with your intended setup. Do not assume a similar-looking accessory fits another brand, tubing size or attachment. If a needed measurement or included component is not stated, ask before purchasing rather than estimating from a photograph.

Before installation

Inspect the item and its packaging on arrival. Check visible surfaces, seams, mesh, connectors and any supplied parts before putting it into the aquarium. If you find a crack, damaged edge, missing part or suspected mismatch, photograph it and contact us before use.

Follow the product’s instructions for assembly, rinsing and installation. Avoid household soap, scented cleaners and unverified chemical treatments on aquarium-contact surfaces. Do not assume every material tolerates boiling, a dishwasher or an abrasive cleaning tool.

Use equipment only for its stated purpose and within any stated limits. Where electrical equipment is part of your setup, follow its manufacturer’s electrical and water-safety instructions. Do not treat an accessory’s aquarium use as a statement that every connected component is submersible.

Sponge filters: airflow & establishing filtration

An air-driven sponge filter needs an appropriate air supply and connections to operate. Check the listing for exactly which parts are included rather than assuming an air pump, airline or valve comes with the filter. Assemble the system according to its instructions and confirm that air and water are moving as intended.

Choose placement and airflow that suit the animals while keeping the filter accessible for maintenance. A new sponge provides a surface for beneficial bacteria, but it is not automatically a mature biological filter. Continue monitoring water quality while filtration becomes established.

Filter performance depends on the complete setup, stocking and maintenance. A size recommendation is not a guarantee that every aquarium of that volume can support the same number of animals. Keep established biological filtration functioning when making changes and follow the filter’s cleaning guidance.

Nets & temporary holding accessories

Choose mesh, opening and depth appropriate to the animals you intend to handle. Check for damaged mesh or exposed edges before use. Move animals calmly and avoid trapping delicate legs, antennae or fins against the rim or surrounding equipment.

A net or holding accessory is a handling tool, not a complete aquarium or long-term housing system. Consider water movement, temperature, escape routes and the time an animal remains confined. Do not assume a floating or attached accessory is secure without checking it in your setup.

Keep handling tools clean and consider separate tools for quarantine and established aquariums. Follow material-specific cleaning guidance and prevent unwanted transfer of water or debris between tanks.

Feeding dishes, stands & holders

Place feeding dishes on a stable surface where the animals can reach them and where uneaten food can be removed. A dish helps keep food in a visible area; it does not remove the need to check feeding amounts or clean up excess food.

Inspect glass or ceramic items for cracks and chipped edges before installation and during maintenance. Avoid forceful contact with rocks, aquarium glass or other hard objects. A holder should fit the intended item without forcing or stressing either part.

For lollie stands and similar feeding holders, confirm the opening and positioning suit the food being used. Support the item securely and check that the arrangement does not block access or create an unsuitable trap for small animals.

Plant weights, rings, moss supports & hides

Plant weights and rings are accessories, not live plants. They do not qualify for the Buy 2 Get 1 Free plant offer. Check what the listing includes before assuming moss or another plant is supplied with a tower or support.

Secure plants without crushing stems or covering growing points that need to remain exposed. Position floating rings so they do not obstruct equipment or concentrate plants where water movement is unsuitable. Recheck attachments as plants grow.

Choose hide openings and internal spaces for the animals’ size and behavior. Position hides and towers securely, with access for inspection and cleaning. An accessory can provide shelter, but it does not guarantee that territorial animals will coexist or that predators cannot reach smaller tankmates.

Heat & ice packs: shipping support

Shipping packs help moderate conditions inside a properly packed shipment. They are not aquarium heaters or chillers, and they do not guarantee a fixed box temperature, a particular carrier delivery time or livestock survival. Use them only as intended and follow the specific pack’s handling instructions.

Our ice pack typically provides cooling for about 24–48 hours, depending on conditions. That is an approximate cooling period, not a promise that it will arrive frozen or remain cold throughout every journey. Ambient heat, transit duration, insulation and package contents affect how quickly it warms.

A thawed ice pack on arrival does not by itself show that it provided no cooling during transit. Heat-pack duration likewise describes the particular product’s intended performance under suitable conditions, not guaranteed protection from every temperature extreme. Keep pack contents separate from aquarium water and livestock.

Review our Shipping Information for packing and weather guidance. Adding a pack does not replace the shipping requirements that apply to live animals or plants, or change the existing Live Arrival Guarantee.

Cleaning, maintenance & wear

Inspect accessories periodically for buildup, weakened attachments, damaged mesh, cracks or loose parts. Clean according to the product’s materials and instructions, and check that the item is still positioned safely afterward.

Suction, airflow and other functions can change with placement, buildup and wear. Investigate an unexpected change rather than compensating by forcing a connection or modifying the item. If you suspect a fault, stop using it where continued operation could damage the setup and contact us with the details.

No universal service life, replacement schedule or new warranty is stated here. Any product-specific instructions or documented warranty should be checked for that exact item. These maintenance notes do not create additional return exclusions.

Package problems, incorrect items & questions

Inspect your equipment or supplies and their packaging on arrival. If the package is torn, wet, leaking, incorrectly labeled or appears to contain the wrong item or quantity, contact support@superiorshrimpaquatics.com promptly with your order number and clear photos. Include the label, the affected product and packaging so we can understand the concern.

Keep the original packaging and avoid using a product that appears contaminated or compromised while you ask for advice. This is practical documentation guidance, not a new claim deadline or a promise of a particular resolution. A routine unopened return and a report that an item arrived damaged or incorrect are different concerns; tell us which applies.

Existing return terms & exchanges

Equipment and supplies are dry goods under our Return Policy. Ordinary returns require prior written authorization and unused, unopened items in their original sealed packaging. Contact us from the email address on your order before sending anything back, and consult the linked policy for its request window and complete eligibility requirements.

The buyer pays return shipping and safe packaging costs. Original shipping charges are non-refundable, and there is no restocking fee. Returned items must arrive in their original condition for inspection.

In-store exchanges are available for eligible items with prior written authorization. Promotional, free and final-sale items are subject to the exclusions in the full policy.

Shipping & mixed orders

These products ship as dry goods under our existing shipping practices. Review the delivery address, selected quantity and variant before checkout. Dispatch and delivery timing depend on fulfillment, stock and the selected service; a carrier transit estimate is not a guaranteed ship date.

If your order also includes live animals or plants, review their shipping requirements separately. Adding equipment or supplies does not remove the requirements that apply to the live items in that order.

Live Arrival Guarantee scope

The existing Live Arrival Guarantee covers live animals and aquatic plants. It excludes food, botanicals and other dry goods. The livestock reporting window and bonus-animal rules are not equipment warranties or supply guarantees. For an issue with this item, contact us and refer to the Return Policy above.

Product-use guidance is separate from store policy. These explanations do not add return exclusions, claim deadlines or guaranteed outcomes. Read the linked policies for complete terms.
