Bucephalandra 'Venus' is a broad-leafed Buce cultivar with a distinctly lush, full quality that sets it apart from the narrower, more angular cultivars in the genus. The leaves are rounded and relatively wide, with a rich green base and a green-to-teal iridescent sheen that shifts across the leaf surface under direct light — softer and more subtle than the strong silver-blue of 'Artemis', warmer and greener than the deep red-purple tones of other cultivars, giving 'Venus' a naturalistic elegance that integrates cleanly into almost any planted layout without demanding visual attention. Like all Buce, it is a slow-growing rhizome epiphyte from Borneo that attaches to driftwood and stone, thrives in low to medium light without CO₂, and feeds through its leaves from the water column. The broad leaf surface accumulates biofilm generously and is actively grazed by Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails.

How to Set It Up

Getting Started

1 Never bury the rhizome — the horizontal stem at the base must remain fully above the substrate at all times. Burying it, even partially, causes rot that spreads through the plant quickly. Attach to hardscape or rest on the substrate surface rather than planting into it.

2 Attach to driftwood or stone — secure the rhizome to driftwood or porous rock with thread or a small amount of super glue gel. The broad leaves of 'Venus' display best when positioned to face outward with open water in front — the rounded leaf form and iridescent surface need unobstructed light and viewing angle to read clearly.

3 Place in low to medium light — 'Venus' is shade-tolerant but the green-teal iridescence is most vivid under medium light. Avoid high-intensity positions where algae growth on the slow-developing leaves becomes a persistent problem before the plant has had time to establish fully.

4 Dose liquid fertilizer consistently — as an epiphyte, 'Venus' draws all nutrition from the water column through its leaves. A balanced liquid fertilizer routine covering macros and micros sustains healthy new growth and maintains the quality of the iridescent sheen on established leaves over the long term.
