Blue Rili Shrimp - Superior Shrimp and Aquatics
Neocaridina Shrimp

Blue Rili Shrimp

A patterned Neocaridina with vivid blue colouration on the head and tail contrasting with a transparent midsection -- the Rili pattern in the blue colour spectrum.

Blue Head and Tail with Clear Midsection Distinctive Rili Two-Tone Pattern Transparent Midsection on Dark Substrate Beginner Friendly Breeds in Freshwater Dark Substrate Essential

Blue Rili Shrimp are a Neocaridina colour variant carrying the distinctive Rili pattern in vivid blue: vivid blue colouration on the head carapace and rear abdomen, with a semi-transparent, reduced-pigmentation midsection between them that creates the floating-ends visual effect that defines all Rili pattern shrimp. The Rili pattern is the same across every colour it is expressed in -- concentrated colour at the two body ends, transparency in the middle -- and the quality of the pattern in any individual is judged by how vivid and opaque the coloured zones are and how transparent and clean the midsection is. Blue Rili are hardy, beginner-friendly Neocaridina in all other respects: broad parameter tolerance, breeds freely in freshwater, identical care to all other Neocaridina. Do not house with other Neocaridina colour variants to prevent colour reversion. See also Red Rili and Orange Rili for the same pattern in different colour expressions.

Pattern, Colour and Behaviour

Blue head and tail with transparent midsection -- the defining Rili character -- the blue colouration is concentrated at the head carapace and the rear abdomen, with the midsection carrying reduced or absent pigmentation. In the best specimens the midsection is clearly transparent -- the substrate visible through the body tissue -- creating a sharp visual break between the two blue ends. The quality of the pattern is judged by the vividness of the blue sections and the degree of transparency in the midsection simultaneously. Pattern clarity improves with selective breeding -- sharp vs diffuse transition -- the defining quality distinction between individual Rili shrimp is how cleanly the colour transitions to transparency at the midsection boundary. In lower-quality individuals the colour fades gradually rather than transitioning sharply, reading as a diffuse fade rather than a clear two-tone pattern. In higher-quality individuals the boundary is clear and relatively sharp, making the pattern read as graphic and deliberate. Dark substrate is essential for maximum Rili pattern visibility -- the transparent midsection only reads as transparent when the substrate visible through it is clearly darker than the coloured ends. Dark substrate -- black aquasoil or dark sand -- provides the contrast that makes the transparency legible as a pattern element rather than a deficiency. On pale substrate the transparent midsection blends with the background and the Rili pattern reads as a diffuse fade rather than a deliberate two-tone. Hardy and beginner friendly -- full Neocaridina parameter tolerance -- Rili shrimp carry the same broad parameter tolerance and robust constitution as all Neocaridina. The patterned colouration does not come with any increased sensitivity or care requirements. Breeds freely in freshwater -- colony pattern quality improves across generations -- females carry clutches and release fully formed shrimplets directly into the tank. As with all Neocaridina, the pattern quality of offspring improves progressively when the clearest-patterned individuals are selected as breeders across successive generations.

Getting Started

1Dark substrate before introduction -- black aquasoil or dark sand is essential for the Rili pattern to read clearly. Without dark substrate the transparent midsection is not visible as a pattern element.
2Stable Neocaridina parameters -- pH 7.0-7.4, GH 6-8, KH 3-5, temperature 72-75F. Confirm stability for one week before introduction.
3Drip acclimate over 45-60 minutes -- float bag 15 minutes, drip at one drop per second for 45-60 minutes before release.
4Select clearest-pattern offspring as future breeders -- when offspring develop, identify individuals with the sharpest colour-to-transparency transition and the most vivid coloured zones as breeding stock.
Bonus Tip

Blue Rili alongside Red Rili in adjacent tanks -- or in a shared display tank where colour-line purity is not a priority -- creates the most immediately contrasting Rili display available. The warm red head and tail of Red Rili against the cool blue head and tail of Blue Rili, with both transparent midsections visible against dark substrate simultaneously, demonstrates the full expressive range of the Rili pattern across the warm-cool colour spectrum in a single viewing frame.
