What to Expect with Appearance

Blue Ramshorn Snails are known for their distinct flat spiral shell paired with a soft blue to blue-gray body coloration. The shell itself is typically translucent amber to light brown, allowing the blue body color to show through and give the snail its signature appearance.

Color intensity can vary depending on age diet and lighting. Juveniles often appear lighter and deepen in color as they mature. In well-maintained aquariums with stable parameters their blue tone becomes more noticeable especially against dark substrates or planted backgrounds.

General Care Behavior and Tank Conditions

Blue Ramshorn Snails are peaceful and active grazers that spend much of their time feeding on soft algae biofilm and leftover food. They are excellent members of a clean-up crew and are completely shrimp safe.

They thrive in mature aquariums with steady water parameters and ample surfaces to graze. Population growth is tied closely to food availability so controlled feeding helps manage numbers naturally. Calcium-rich water supports strong healthy shell development.

Bonus Tip

Providing cuttlebone or other calcium sources can help prevent shell thinning and keep Blue Ramshorn Snails looking their best.

Shells eroded

When I first received them I noticed that they weren't blue. Instead they were a chalky brown but I liked them anyways. Now that I've had them a while one of them came cruising past on the glass and I saw that his shell.was cracked into pieces that were detaching from his body. I feel so sad that I didn't realize their shells were eroding. I never saw that one again and am doing my best to make sure it doesn't happen to the remaining 2 snails.

Hi Kim
Looks like you've had these guys since October. If it was sent like that, it would have been pretty noticeable and probably wouldn't have survived so long. I wonder if they are not getting enough calcium from your comment. More than happy to help you figure out what's going but this doesn't seem like it's something on our end to warrant the negative review.

Love these little blues!

Received 20+ of the little blue snails. Arrived well packaged, I opened, acclimated, and released. They hit the ground running and immediately spread out and started doing their job.
