Black Seiryu Stone is a dark grey-to-black limestone with sharp, angular edges and a distinctive network of white calcite veins running across its surface. The veining pattern is unique to every piece -- no two stones share the same distribution of white lines against the dark base -- and the contrast between the near-black stone surface and the bright calcite veins gives each piece a graphic, almost painted quality that reads as striking from across the room. Seiryu Stone is the defining hardscape material of the Iwagumi aquascaping style, and its angular, cliff-like profile makes it equally effective as a solo focal stone or as part of a multi-piece mountain range composition. One important parameter note: Seiryu Stone is a limestone and will gradually raise KH and pH over time as it dissolves slowly into the water. This makes it well-suited to Neocaridina setups which benefit from stable KH, but it is not compatible with Caridina tanks that require soft, acidic water. Monitor parameters when first introducing the stone and adjust water change routine as needed.
Appearance & Character
Black Base, White Veining
Deep black-grey base with white calcite veining -- the most graphic stone contrast in aquascaping -- the surface of Black Seiryu Stone is a near-black dark grey when dry, deepening to a rich, true black when wet. Across this dark surface runs a network of white to pale grey calcite veins -- irregular, branching lines that vary in width, density, and pattern from piece to piece. The contrast between the dark base and bright veining is the defining visual feature of the stone and the primary reason it has remained one of the most popular aquascaping materials in the hobby for decades. The veining pattern is entirely natural and unrepeatable -- each piece is unique.
Sharp, angular edges and flat faces -- a cliff-like profile distinct from rounded river stones -- Seiryu Stone has a distinctly angular character. The edges are sharp and the faces relatively flat, giving pieces a stratified, cliff-like or mountainous profile when oriented vertically. This makes it one of the most effective stones for creating the impression of scale and geological depth in small tanks -- a well-chosen piece oriented with its flat face forward reads as a mountain face or rock formation at a scale far beyond its actual size.
Each piece is unique in veining pattern, profile, and proportions -- no two pieces of Seiryu Stone are identical. The distribution and density of white calcite veining, the sharpness and angle of the edges, the overall profile, and the ratio of flat faces to angular edges all vary between pieces. Selecting pieces whose veining patterns and profiles complement each other is one of the primary creative decisions in Seiryu-based aquascaping.
Colour deepens dramatically when wet -- dry appearance is not the final appearance -- Seiryu Stone appears a medium dark grey when dry. When submerged the colour deepens considerably, approaching true black in the darkest areas and making the white calcite veining appear brighter and more contrasty by comparison. Always evaluate pieces wet or under running water to assess the final submerged colour before making layout decisions.
Water Chemistry
Parameter Impact -- Read Before Purchasing
Raises KH and pH over time -- compatible with Neocaridina, not with Caridina -- Seiryu Stone is a limestone and dissolves slowly in aquarium water, releasing carbonates that raise KH and stabilise or gradually increase pH. In a Neocaridina tank this is generally beneficial -- stable KH prevents pH swings and the raised hardness sits comfortably within the Neocaridina parameter range. In a Caridina tank requiring pH 6.0--6.8 and KH 0--2, Seiryu Stone will work against the active substrate buffering system and is not recommended. Do not use Black Seiryu Stone in a Caridina setup.
Rate of parameter impact varies by piece size and tank volume -- larger pieces in smaller tanks will raise KH more noticeably than small accent pieces in larger volumes. Monitor KH weekly for the first month after introduction and adjust your water change routine if KH climbs outside your target range. Most Neocaridina keepers find the impact stabilises at a manageable level within four to six weeks as the most soluble surface calcium is depleted.
Rinse thoroughly before use -- surface dust and calcite particles are normal -- rinse each piece under running water and scrub with a stiff brush before placing in the tank. A brief soak of 30--60 minutes after rinsing clears remaining surface particulate. Do not boil Seiryu Stone -- thermal shock can cause cracking along the calcite veins.

Layout & Composition
The defining stone of Iwagumi -- mountain range compositions in odd-numbered groupings -- the classic Iwagumi layout uses Seiryu Stone in groups of three, five, or seven pieces arranged to suggest a mountain range, with one dominant anchor stone (the oyaishi) flanked by progressively smaller secondary and tertiary stones. Burying the base of each stone partially in substrate so only the upper portion is visible dramatically increases the impression of scale. All stones in a composition should be oriented with their strata lines running in the same direction to read as a unified geological formation.
Excellent attachment surface for mosses and epiphytic plants -- the sharp edges and rough surface texture of Seiryu Stone hold cotton thread and super glue gel securely, making it a reliable attachment surface for Java Moss, Weeping Moss, Bucephalandra, and Anubias. Plants attached to the angular edges and flat faces of Seiryu Stone develop a naturalistic, overgrown cliff appearance over time that is one of the most effective planted hardscape combinations available.
Can be split along natural fault lines with a chisel and hammer -- Seiryu Stone fractures relatively cleanly along its natural calcite veins and fault lines. Splitting a larger piece produces two smaller pieces with fresh, angular faces that match the character of the original stone. This allows a single larger piece to be adapted into multiple composition elements or sized to fit a specific tank dimension.
Specific Piece Requests
Every piece of Black Seiryu Stone is unique in size, profile, edge sharpness, and veining pattern. If you have a specific preference -- a taller, more vertical cliff-face profile; a broader horizontal piece; a particular size range; denser or more delicate veining; or anything else -- leave a note at checkout and we will do our best to select a piece that matches your needs from current stock. We cannot guarantee an exact match, but we read every note and pull accordingly.
