Black Military Helmet Snail
A smooth, glossy Nerite with a deep brown to near-black shell shaped like a soldier's helmet. One of the most effective algae grazers available, with a clean minimal appearance that works in any planted setup.
Black Military Helmet Snails (Neritina pulligera), also known as the Black Racer Nerite or Dusky Nerite, are a widely distributed Indo-Pacific Nerite species native to fast-flowing freshwater streams and rivers with rocky substrates. The shell is smooth, low-profile, and deeply glossy in a dark brown to near-black colouration that gives it its common name. Unlike the patterned Nerites in the hobby -- zebra stripes, olive mottling, horns and spikes -- the Black Military Helmet reads as clean and minimal, letting the gloss and the distinctive rounded helmet profile do the visual work. The foot is kept mostly tucked inside the shell during movement, giving the snail a compact, streamlined appearance as it grazes. Highly effective at consuming algae films across glass, hardscape, and plant surfaces. Cannot breed in freshwater. Prefers well-oxygenated water with moderate flow. Safe with all shrimp and snail species. GH 6+ for shell health.
Appearance
Shell Form & Colouration
Smooth, low-profile, deeply glossy shell in deep brown to near-black. The shell surface of the Black Military Helmet Snail is smooth and polished rather than ridged or textured, producing a gloss that catches light clearly and gives the shell a distinctly clean, almost lacquered appearance. The dark colouration ranges from a very deep warm brown in some individuals to near-black in the darkest specimens. Unlike the patterned Nerites commonly kept in the hobby, the Black Military Helmet's shell has no visible markings or banding, giving it a minimal, graphic quality that reads differently from other Nerite species in the same tank.
Distinctive rounded helmet profile, lower and wider than conical Nerite species. The shell has a notably broad, rounded, low-domed shape that gives the snail its common name. It is wider relative to its height than many other Nerite species, sitting close to the substrate and hardscape as it grazes. Up to approximately 1 inch at maturity.
Foot remains mostly inside the shell during movement. Black Military Helmet Snails keep the bulk of their foot retracted inside the shell aperture as they move, showing only the antennae and a narrow edge of the foot. This gives them a more compact, shell-dominant appearance than species like Mystery Snails where the foot and body are prominently visible during activity.
Behaviour & Care
Grazing, Flow & Husbandry
Highly active and effective algae grazer across glass, hardscape, and plant surfaces. Black Military Helmet Snails graze continuously and cover significant tank surface area during both day and night. They are particularly effective at consuming the soft green film algae and brown diatom films that accumulate on glass and smooth hardscape. In the hobby they are regarded as one of the most active and thorough algae-eating Nerite species available.
Prefers good water flow and high oxygenation. In the wild this species inhabits fast-flowing streams and rivers. In captivity it performs best and lives longest in tanks with adequate flow and oxygen. A sponge filter or HOB with a moderate output keeps the water oxygenated and produces the kind of gentle current this species appreciates. Stagnant, low-flow tanks are tolerated but result in reduced activity and a shorter lifespan over time.
Cannot breed in freshwater, population is completely stable. Like all Nerite species, Black Military Helmet Snails require brackish water for larval development. White egg capsules may appear on hardscape, glass, and plant surfaces but will not hatch in freshwater. You will never have more than you introduce.
Always place upright in the tank, never drop in. This is one of the most important practical care notes for this species. Neritina pulligera has difficulty righting itself if it lands upside down, and a snail left inverted on the substrate can die in that position. Use aquarium tweezers or your fingers to place each snail upright on a hard surface when introducing it to the tank. Do not drop them in and let them sink to the bottom at random.
Cover the tank and keep water line low. Like all Nerites, Black Military Helmet Snails climb and will exit the water through any gap. Keep the water line at least 5 to 7cm below the rim or use a tight-fitting lid.
GH 6+ and pH above 7.0 for long-term shell quality. Calcium availability directly affects the gloss and integrity of the shell. In soft or acidic water the shell surface becomes dull, pitted, or eroded over time. Maintain GH 6+ and supplement with cuttlebone in softer water. Standard Neocaridina parameters are fully adequate. Safe with all Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp.
Supplement with algae wafers and blanched vegetables in new or low-algae tanks. In a well-established tank with consistent algae growth they require no supplemental feeding. In newer or cleaner tanks supplement with algae wafers, blanched zucchini, or spinach. This species can take time to accept prepared foods and may initially ignore wafers, so persistence and a variety of food placements is recommended while the snail adjusts.
Keeper's NoteThe Black Military Helmet Snail is one of the most visually understated Nerites available, and in the right tank that restraint is exactly what makes it work. Against pale substrate or bright green planting the glossy near-black shell reads as a clean, deliberate contrast element without competing with the shrimp or plants for attention. A small group of three to five scattered across the foreground and glass of a shrimp tank provides genuine algae control and a subtle visual anchor that holds the composition together without drawing the eye away from the main display.
