Baby Shrimp Food

An ultra-fine powdered food formulated for the first weeks of a shrimplet's life — small enough to reach them, nutritious enough to grow them.

Ultra-Fine Powder Particle Size Shrimplet-Specific Nutrition Disperses Through Water Column Safe for All Shrimp Species Won't Cloud Water

The first two to three weeks after shrimplets are released is the period of highest mortality in a shrimp breeding tank — and the most common cause of early loss is not water quality or predation but inadequate access to appropriate food. Newly released shrimplets are too small to access most standard shrimp foods effectively, spending the early days grazing biofilm from surfaces while the adult food sitting on the substrate is physically too large for them to consume. Baby Shrimp Food is formulated specifically for this window — an ultra-fine powder with a particle size small enough for shrimplets to ingest from the moment they are released, dispersing through the water column and settling across all available surfaces to reach juveniles wherever they are in the tank. Suitable for Neocaridina, Caridina, and all freshwater shrimp species without distinction.

Why Particle Size Is Everything

Particle size matched to shrimplet mouth size — the defining characteristic of a baby shrimp food is not its nutritional profile but its physical particle size. Newly released shrimplets have mouths too small to process standard pellets, wafers, or even most granule-format foods. Ultra-fine powder disperses into particles small enough for shrimplets to ingest directly, reaching them during the critical first days when biofilm alone is insufficient to support rapid growth. Disperses through the water column and settles across all surfaces — when added to the tank, the fine powder suspends briefly in the water column before settling gradually across the substrate, plant leaves, hardscape, and moss surfaces throughout the tank. Shrimplets grazing anywhere in the tank encounter food particles on the surfaces they are already using — the food comes to them rather than requiring them to locate a single feeding point on the substrate. Supplements biofilm during the period before it fully develops — in a well-established tank with mature biofilm on plants and hardscape, shrimplets have meaningful access to natural food from day one. In newer tanks, or following a tank disruption that reduced biofilm, Baby Shrimp Food provides nutritional support during the gap between release and the establishment of adequate natural biofilm coverage. Safe for adult shrimp and does not disrupt the tank ecosystem — adult Neocaridina and Caridina will graze Baby Shrimp Food alongside juveniles without issue. The fine particles are consumed quickly by the tank's combined shrimp and snail population, and when dosed correctly the food does not cloud the water or leave uneaten residue that accumulates and degrades water quality. Suitable for continuous low-dose use in active breeding colonies — in tanks with regular breeding activity and multiple generations of shrimplets present at different stages, Baby Shrimp Food can be used as a low-dose supplement alongside standard adult foods rather than reserved exclusively for the post-release period. Small amounts every two to three days ensures newly released shrimplets always have access to appropriately sized food regardless of when they were released.

Feeding Guide

1 Begin feeding on the day shrimplets are first observed — start supplementing with Baby Shrimp Food as soon as you see the first shrimplets in the tank. The earliest days after release are when adequate nutrition is most critical for survival and growth rate. There is no benefit to waiting — the earlier appropriate food is available, the better the early survival outcomes.
2 Use a very small amount — less than you think — the correct dose for a standard nano or shrimp tank is a small pinch or the tip of a flat toothpick's worth of powder, not a full measure. Baby Shrimp Food is concentrated and the particles are fine enough that a small amount covers a large surface area when dispersed. Overdosing is the most common user error and the primary cause of water quality issues with powdered foods.
3 Dose every two to three days rather than daily — shrimplets in an established tank with healthy biofilm do not need daily supplementation. Feeding every two to three days provides nutritional support without building up uneaten residue. In tanks with very young shrimplets and limited biofilm, daily feeding at a minimal dose is appropriate for the first week before reducing frequency.
4 Transition to standard foods as shrimplets grow — by three to four weeks old, most shrimplets are large enough to access standard shrimp foods alongside adults. Begin introducing regular shrimp food in small amounts during this transition period, reducing Baby Shrimp Food dosing gradually as the juveniles become visibly capable of feeding from standard-sized particles. There is no fixed switchover date — watch the shrimplets and transition when their size makes it practical.
💡 Bonus Tip

Baby Shrimp Food can be mixed into a small amount of tank water in a bottle cap or shot glass before adding to the tank — stirring the powder into a few millilitres of water first creates a slurry that disperses more evenly and reaches more surface area than dry powder added directly to the surface, which can clump and concentrate in one area before dispersing. A few seconds of mixing before dosing makes a meaningful difference in how broadly the food reaches across the tank.
