Irregular cream and white variegation unique to every leaf — the marbled pattern on Anubias 'Marble' is not a repeating or consistent print but a genuinely irregular distribution of cream, white, and pale yellow sectors within a deep green base that varies between leaves, between growth periods, and between individual plants. Some leaves are predominantly green with small cream flecks; others are broadly sectored with large pale areas covering half or more of the leaf surface. No two leaves on a mature plant are identical — the pattern is always a discovery.
Variegation is a stable chimeric trait — not a deficiency — the pale areas on variegated Anubias result from a chimeric cell condition in which sectors of the leaf lack chlorophyll-producing cells, producing pale or white tissue alongside normal green tissue. This is a stable, inherited genetic characteristic of the cultivar — not a sign of nutrient deficiency, disease, or stress. The variegation will not revert to solid green under better conditions, and pale leaves are not damaged or unhealthy leaves that require correction.
Heavily variegated leaves grow more slowly and are more delicate — leaves with large pale sectors contain less photosynthetically active tissue than fully green leaves, which means they contribute less to the plant's overall energy production and are more sensitive to stress, rough handling, and parameter instability than leaves with predominantly green patterning. Rhizome must remain fully above substrate at all times — the horizontal connecting stem must never be buried or covered. Burial causes rot that spreads irreversibly through the plant. Attach to driftwood or stone with cotton thread or super glue gel, keeping the entire rhizome exposed to open water. In a plant as slow-growing and individually distinctive as Marble, losing the rhizome to rot from an avoidable mistake is a particularly significant loss.

Position in a prominent, clearly visible location — Marble's value is in the detail of individual leaf patterning, which requires proximity and clear sightlines to appreciate fully. Place it in a foreground or near-midground position on hardscape where the leaf surface is easily visible from the front of the tank — not tucked behind other plants or positioned where the patterned leaves are partially obscured. A plant this distinctive deserves to be seen clearly.

Low to medium light with a consistent photoperiod — Marble thrives under the same low to medium light conditions as standard Anubias barteri. The pale, chlorophyll-reduced sectors of variegated leaves are more sensitive to high light intensity than fully green tissue — excessive light risks algae on the green portions and does not improve the variegation. A consistent 8–10 hour photoperiod at low to medium intensity maintains leaf quality and supports steady new growth.

Fertilize consistently but avoid nitrogen excess — liquid fertilization covering macros, micros, and iron supports healthy rhizome growth and the development of fully sized, richly patterned new leaves. Avoid very high nitrogen levels, which in some variegated plants can shift new growth toward more heavily green — less variegated — patterning. A balanced fertilizer dosed at moderate levels maintains the conditions that support the variegation without pushing toward one extreme.
