Growth & Behavior Over Time

Stays on the substrate immediately — the weighted base keeps the ball in place from the moment it's introduced, with no floating period, no acclimation, and no anchoring required. Position it wherever you want it and it stays there. Moss grows outward from the ball — over weeks and months the moss extends outward from the initial form, gradually building a denser, fuller mound. Growth rate depends on lighting and nutrients but is reliable under even basic conditions. Biofilm accumulates quickly — the textured moss surface begins developing biofilm within days of introduction, giving shrimp and fry an immediate, high-value foraging surface they will return to constantly. Doubles as shelter and breeding cover — the rounded, dense structure provides natural enclosure that shrimplets and fry actively seek out for protection. Colonies with a sinking moss ball in the tank consistently show better shrimplet survival. Tolerates a wide range of conditions — like most aquatic mosses, the sinking ball is forgiving across a broad parameter range and does not require CO₂, high lighting, or precise nutrient dosing to grow and remain healthy. Can be repositioned freely — unlike moss tied to fixed hardscape, the weighted ball can be moved at any time without damaging the plant or disrupting the tank layout, giving you flexibility as the aquascape evolves.

How to Set It Up

Getting Started

1 Rinse before placing — give the moss ball a gentle rinse in dechlorinated or tank water before introducing it. This removes any loose debris from shipping and helps the moss settle quickly into its new environment.

2 Place anywhere on the substrate — set the ball in its intended position and leave it. The weighted base holds it in place without any additional steps. Foreground and midground placements work equally well depending on tank size and layout.

3 Provide low to medium light — the moss grows well under standard aquarium lighting without any supplementation. Higher light will accelerate growth slightly; very low light slows it but won't cause decline in most cases.

4 Trim occasionally to maintain shape — as the moss grows outward, occasional light trimming with scissors keeps the ball's shape tidy and prevents any single side from overgrowing. Trimmings can be used to propagate new growth elsewhere in the tank.
