The exact layout of the pattern varies from shrimp to shrimp and can shift slightly as they grow and molt. Females tend to show more solid areas of deep red while males may carry sharper pattern contrast with more transparent breaks. Younger individuals often appear lighter and become richer through multiple molts in a healthy, mineral-stable environment.

General Care Behavior and Tank Conditions

Like all Neocaridina, Red Onyx Shrimp thrive in mature aquariums rich in biofilm, moss, botanicals, and other grazing surfaces. They are peaceful, active foragers that help contribute to a clean, balanced aquascape.

Consistent water parameters and a diet including shrimp-specific foods, spirulina, and occasional vegetables encourage healthy growth, reproduction, and color development. Avoid sudden swings in water chemistry to protect the stability of pigment expression.
