Red Ramshorn Snail - Superior Shrimp and Aquatics
Freshwater Snails

Red Ramshorn Snail

A selectively bred red-morph Ramshorn with a vivid scarlet body visible through the shell walls -- the most intensely coloured Ramshorn in the catalog and an active, visible cleanup crew member.

Vivid Scarlet Body Through Translucent Shell Most Colourful Ramshorn Available Flat Spiral Shell for Tight Spaces Active Continuous Grazer Self-Regulating Population Shrimp Safe

Red Ramshorn Snails are a selectively bred colour morph of the common Ramshorn -- line-bred specifically for the most vivid scarlet-red body pigmentation, which shows through the translucent shell walls and across the exposed mantle and foot of each individual snail. The shell itself is a pale translucent pink-red, flat-spiral in form, and the vivid red body visible behind and through it gives the snail a uniformly intense red appearance that is more saturated and more immediately visible than the softer tones of lower-grade red Ramshorns. Like all Ramshorns: active and visible grazers across every tank surface, flat shell allows access to tight spaces, population is food-limited and self-regulating without intervention, and they cannot damage healthy plant tissue. Compatible with Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp without competition or predation at any life stage. Pairs naturally with any red-themed shrimp colony or as a vivid accent to a mixed cleanup crew.

Colour, Behaviour and Cleaning

Vivid scarlet body visible through and beyond the shell -- the defining quality of selectively bred Red Ramshorns versus wild-type or lower-grade red morphs is colour saturation -- the body pigmentation is intense enough to read as a clearly vivid red through the translucent shell walls and across the exposed foot and mantle when the snail is active on the glass. Against dark substrate the red body reads immediately and clearly; on pale substrate the colour is still vivid but reads with less contrast. The colour is maintained across generations in well-kept breeding lines. Flat spiral shell accesses surfaces dome-shelled snails cannot reach -- the disc-like, flat-spiral shell profile allows Red Ramshorns to navigate into spaces where dome-shelled snails like Mystery Snails cannot fit -- under plant leaves, between closely spaced stem plants, in the grooves of textured driftwood, and along the substrate-glass junction where algae and detritus accumulate. The combination of the flat shell and the Ramshorn group's general activity level makes them more thorough surface cleaners than dome-shelled species at comparable stocking densities. Active continuous grazers -- visibly working across all surfaces throughout the day -- Ramshorns are among the most visibly active snails in the catalog -- moving across glass, hardscape, plant leaves, and substrate continuously throughout the day, consuming green algae, brown diatom films, biofilm, and decaying plant matter wherever they find it. The vivid red body colour of the Red Ramshorn makes this constant movement clearly visible in a way that more camouflage-coloured snails are not -- each individual is easy to track and observe. Population self-regulates with food availability -- no population explosion in well-fed tanks -- like all Ramshorns, Red Ramshorn population growth is directly controlled by available organic material rather than reproductive rate in isolation. In tanks with appropriate feeding the population stabilises at a modest level and holds there without intervention. Population increase is a reliable indicator of excess organic load rather than a snail problem. Red Ramshorns breed more slowly than Bladder Snails, making population management through feeding control reliable and effective. GH of 6 or above required for shell integrity and colour clarity -- the flat, relatively thin shell of Ramshorns is more susceptible to pitting and erosion in soft water than the thicker shells of dome-shaped snails. In tanks with GH below 4, the shell thins and pits -- which also reduces the translucency that allows the vivid body colour to show through. Maintaining GH at 6 or above preserves both shell health and the optical quality that makes the red body most visible.

Getting Started

1Introduce to a stable established tank with established algae -- Red Ramshorns perform best and colour up most vividly in tanks with an established algae and biofilm layer to graze. Introduce to a tank that has been running for at least four weeks with some algae development on glass and hardscape.
2Use dark substrate for maximum colour contrast -- black aquasoil, dark sand, or dark gravel provides the contrasting background against which the vivid scarlet body of Red Ramshorns reads most clearly. On pale substrate the red is visible but less immediately impactful.
3Maintain GH at 6 or above -- in soft water tanks, add a GH+ mineral supplement to water changes or place a small piece of cuttlebone in the filter to maintain dissolved calcium at the level required for healthy shell development. This benefits shrimp simultaneously if Red Ramshorns are kept in a shrimp tank.
4Monitor population as a feeding guide and adjust feeding frequency if needed -- if population grows beyond the desired level without any change in feeding regime, slightly reduce feeding frequency or quantity. Red Ramshorns respond to reduced food availability with reduced reproductive rate within two to three generations, making population management through feeding significantly more reliable and less labour-intensive than manual removal.
Bonus Tip

Red Ramshorn Snails in a tank with Painted Fire Red or Dark Bloody Mary shrimp creates the most cohesive red-themed cleanup combination in the catalog -- the vivid scarlet of the snail bodies and the deep opaque red of the shrimp bodies read as a deliberately matched colour pairing on dark substrate, and the two species occupy complementary cleaning niches (shrimp focus on substrate and plant surfaces, Ramshorns cover glass, upper plant surfaces, and the substrate-glass junction) that together provide more complete tank maintenance than either species alone.

I was worried about a safe delivery with it being 80+ degrees here in Texas. But all snails arrived safely and quickly and I even got a bonus snail which is always awesome.

Great Quality and Beautiful Snails for a Great Value.

I ordered 10 of both the blue and red ramshorns, and received extras in both of my orders! They arrived within 2 days of being shipped and in excellent condition for the most part. All the blues acclimated to my aquarium excellently and have already started breeding! Unfortunately 1 of the reds arrived deceased, and another died shortly after acclimation, but such is the nature of shipping live animals. I also put another 2 of the reds in my "cull" tank (they will still live long and happy lives, I assure you) :). as they were on the browner side, but no big issue at all. So, of the 12 reds received 8 went into my tank. Still giving 5 stars though, because there are some of the most vibrant and beautiful red and pink ramshorns I have ever seen. I have quite literally never had any other ramshorns that are as vibrant and beautiful as the ones I was shipped. I will most certainly be purchasing my shrimp and snails from Superior Shrimp and Aquatics in the future!
