How to Set It Up

Getting Started

1 Use an active buffering substrate — active soil is essential for maintaining the low pH and near-zero KH that Yellow King Kongs require. Inert substrates cannot maintain the acidic parameters this species needs long-term.

2 Mix and stabilize RO water before use — use reverse osmosis water remineralized to GH 4–6, targeting pH 5.8–6.6 and KH 0–2. Allow parameters to fully stabilize in the tank before introducing shrimp.

3 Add botanicals and fine-leafed plants — Catappa leaves or alder cones help buffer pH naturally and enrich the environment. Mosses and fine-leafed plants provide biofilm surfaces and shelter that support colony confidence and breeding activity.

4 Feed varied, high-quality foods — rotate between biofilm-supporting foods, shrimp-specific pellets, and blanched vegetables to support healthy molting, coloration, and reproductive activity in the colony.
