A hardy, cold-tolerant schooling fish with a delicate iridescent body stripe and red-tipped fins. One of the best fish options for unheated shrimp tanks and a genuinely underappreciated species.

White Cloud Mountain Minnows (Tanichthys albonubes) are a small, hardy, cold-tolerant schooling fish native to the mountain streams of southern China. They carry a subtle but attractive iridescent greenish-gold lateral stripe, red-tipped fins, and a slender, active body that reads as elegant rather than flashy at close range. Their cold tolerance is their most practically significant characteristic in a shrimp-keeping context -- they thrive in the 65 to 72°F range where most tropical fish struggle, which is precisely the temperature range preferred by Neocaridina shrimp. This makes them one of the few fish species that can share a Neocaridina tank without requiring a heater compromise in either direction. Extremely hardy, tolerant of a wide pH and hardness range, and peaceful with all tankmates of appropriate size.

Appearance & Character

Subtle and Elegant

Iridescent greenish-gold lateral stripe with red-tipped fins -- a refined look that rewards close observation. The White Cloud's colouration is understated compared to Neon Tetras or Celestial Pearl Danios but has a delicate, naturalistic quality that suits planted tanks particularly well. The iridescent stripe catches light as the fish moves, and the red fin tips add a warm accent without dominating. Long-finned variants are also available with extended, flowing fin development that amplifies the elegance of the base species. Active, confident schooling behaviour even in smaller groups. White Clouds school more loosely than Neon Tetras and are less prone to stress in groups of 6, though larger schools of 10 or more produce more cohesive and visually interesting behaviour. They are active throughout the water column and spend significant time in the upper and mid levels of the tank, complementing bottom-dwelling shrimp without competing for the same space.
Shrimp Compatibility

One of the Best Fish for Shrimp Tanks

Among the most shrimp-compatible fish available -- adult Neocaridina are effectively safe. White Cloud Mountain Minnows have small mouths relative to their body size and are not aggressive hunters. Adult Neocaridina shrimp at full size are generally ignored. In a heavily planted tank with adequate cover, shrimplet survival is meaningfully better with White Clouds than with most other fish species of comparable size. Temperature overlap with Neocaridina is near-perfect. Both species prefer 65 to 72°F, which means no compromise is required on temperature when keeping them together. This is the primary practical advantage of White Clouds over virtually every other commonly kept freshwater fish for Neocaridina setups. A shrimp tank running at 68°F is an ideal White Cloud tank simultaneously. Wide pH and hardness tolerance matches the full Neocaridina range. White Clouds tolerate pH 6.0 to 8.0 and GH 4 to 16 comfortably, covering the entire Neocaridina parameter range without adjustment. They are one of the most parameter-flexible fish in the freshwater hobby. Shrimplets at risk in sparse tanks -- dense planting strongly recommended. While White Clouds are among the least predatory small fish available, they are still opportunistic and will consume shrimplets small enough to fit in their mouths. Dense moss, Subwassertang, and fine-leaved plants provide the cover that keeps shrimplet survival rates high in a mixed tank.
Keeper's Note

White Cloud Mountain Minnows are one of the most underrated fish in the hobby. They are as hardy as White Clouds in the cold, as peaceful as any commonly kept fish, and one of the very few species that genuinely thrives at the same temperature as Neocaridina shrimp without any compromise. A school of 10 in a planted shrimp tank adds movement, mid-water colour, and visual depth that a shrimp-only tank cannot produce, with minimal impact on shrimp survival rates in a well-planted setup.

*All seem to be in pretty good health! Active ever since unboxing, hanging out pretty tightly as they are probably still getting used to things. Wayy tinier than I expected, though!*

I’d say about half of what I received (6 out of maybe 13) still have basically no red coloring, which is slightly disappointing. I’m hoping they’ll get more comfortable and color up, but I don’t mind too much.

At least one seems to have a somewhat bent spine, especially near the tail. It’s not enough for major concern, but still notable.

*Overall cute little guys, pretty good health it seems, hoping they do well. Will be considering more if they seem happy.*

Additional note: Ice pack seemed to have been double-wrapped in insulation, and it didn’t feel like it did too much in terms of cooling for the box. Didn’t seem to have caused any issues though.
