Tricolor Horn Snail - Superior Shrimp and Aquatics
Freshwater Snails

Tricolor Horn Snail

A small horned Nerite with a striking three-tone shell in yellow, black, and orange, edged with dark protruding horns. One of the most visually distinctive small algae grazers available and completely unable to breed in freshwater.

Three-Tone Yellow, Black & Orange Shell Dark Protruding Horns Clithon / Neritina sp. Cannot Breed in Freshwater Exceptional Glass Cleaner Shrimp Safe

Tricolor Horn Snails are a horned Nerite variant distinguished by a shell displaying three distinct colour zones in yellow, black, and orange, with the characteristic dark horn-like spines protruding from the shell edge that define the horned Nerite group. The tricolour banding is bolder and more contrasty than the two-tone patterning of standard horned Nerites, and combined with the spine structure the result is one of the most immediately eye-catching small snails available in the freshwater hobby. Like all Nerites they are outstanding algae grazers, particularly effective at keeping glass clear, and they cannot complete their reproductive cycle in freshwater, meaning population is permanently fixed at whatever number you introduce. Small at 0.5 to 0.8 inches, low bioload, and fully safe with all shrimp. Horns break easily during normal activity and handling, which is harmless to the snail.

Three Colours and Horns

Distinct yellow, black, and orange banding across the shell. The tricolour patterning is the defining characteristic of this variant. The colour zones are clearly separated rather than blended, producing a bold banded appearance that reads clearly at close range. Pattern distribution varies between individuals, so no two Tricolor Horn Snails are identical in the precise arrangement of the three colours. Dark horn-like spines protruding from the shell edge. The horns are natural calcified extensions of the shell and are characteristic of the horned Nerite group. They are brittle and break easily during normal activity, handling, or transit. Broken horns cause no harm to the snail and do not regrow. Wild-caught specimens typically have more complete horn coverage than long-term captive individuals. Small at 0.5 to 0.8 inches, with a correspondingly low bioload. The compact size makes Tricolor Horn Snails well-suited to nano tanks where larger snails would be disproportionate. Their small size also means minimal waste production, which matters in carefully managed shrimp tanks where bioload is a consideration.

Grazing & Requirements

Outstanding algae grazer, particularly effective on glass. Tricolor Horn Snails consume green film algae, brown diatom films, and biofilm continuously across glass, hardscape, and plant surfaces. They are noted specifically for keeping aquarium glass clear. They will not touch healthy living plants or mosses. Cannot breed in freshwater, so population is permanently fixed. White egg capsules may be deposited on hardscape and glass but will not hatch without brackish conditions. Population requires no management whatsoever. pH 6.5 to 8.0, GH 6 to 12, temperature 70 to 80°F. Alkaline water is preferred for shell and horn integrity. In acidic water the shell erodes and the horns degrade prematurely. Standard Neocaridina parameters are ideal. Not recommended for low-pH Caridina setups. Stock no more than one snail per 4 gallons and supplement feeding. In larger numbers they will exhaust available algae and require supplemental feeding with algae wafers, spirulina discs, or blanched vegetables. Overstocking relative to available algae is the most common cause of decline in this species. Cover the tank. Horned Nerites are tidal snails and climb readily above the waterline. They can survive out of water for extended periods but will desiccate if left too long. A fitted lid or a water line kept well below the rim is essential. Fully safe with all shrimp. Compatible with all Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp at every life stage. Highly sensitive to copper in medications and fertilisers.
Keeper's Note

The Tricolor Horn Snail packs more visual interest into a half-inch shell than almost any other snail in the hobby. The three-tone banding combined with the spine structure makes each individual genuinely worth looking at up close, and the small size means a group of five in a nano planted tank provides real glass-cleaning value without adding meaningful bioload. Pair with a dark substrate to make the yellow and orange bands read at maximum contrast.
