The sponge filter is the single most recommended filtration option for shrimp tanks, and for good reason. It is the only common filter type with no impeller, no intake suction, and no mechanical components that can trap, injure, or kill shrimplets -- the smallest juvenile shrimp are safe around a sponge filter at any life stage. Beyond safety, sponge filters are highly effective biological filters: the dense foam matrix provides an enormous surface area for beneficial bacteria colonisation, and a well-established sponge filter running for several months is one of the most stable and resilient biological filter media available in the hobby. They are air-pump driven, simple to maintain, inexpensive to run, and the gentle surface agitation they produce is ideal for shrimp tanks where strong flow is counterproductive. Why Sponge Filters for Shrimp
Safety, Biology, and Simplicity
No suction intake -- completely safe for shrimplets at every life stage -- standard hang-on-back and canister filters draw water through an intake that creates suction strong enough to trap and kill juvenile shrimp and newly hatched shrimplets. A sponge filter draws water through the foam matrix at a rate too slow to create any suction risk. Shrimplets crawl freely across the sponge surface without risk of being pulled in. This is the primary reason sponge filtration is the default recommendation for shrimp breeding tanks.
Superior biological filtration -- the foam matrix is an ideal bacterial colonisation surface -- the dense, porous foam of a sponge filter provides significantly more surface area per unit volume than most other filter media types. Beneficial nitrifying bacteria colonise the full depth of the foam matrix over four to eight weeks of operation, producing a stable and resilient biological filter that handles ammonia and nitrite conversion reliably. A well-seasoned sponge filter is one of the most valuable assets in a shrimp room -- an established sponge can be moved to a new tank to instantly seed its nitrogen cycle.
Shrimp graze the sponge surface continuously -- it functions as a biofilm foraging station -- the exterior surface of a running sponge filter accumulates a rich biofilm of bacteria, microorganisms, and fine organic matter. Shrimp of all sizes actively graze this surface throughout the day, treating the sponge as one of the most productive foraging sites in the tank. In a shrimp tank the sponge filter contributes to feeding as well as filtration.
Gentle flow -- ideal for shrimp that do not tolerate strong current -- sponge filters produce slow, diffuse water movement rather than a directed current. This is the appropriate flow level for dwarf shrimp tanks where strong flow stresses shrimp, disrupts shrimplets, and works against the gentle surface coverage that characterises a healthy shrimp tank. The air-driven bubble stream also provides gentle surface agitation for gas exchange without the turbulence of a powerhead or HOB output.
Simple maintenance -- squeeze in old tank water, never replace -- sponge filter maintenance consists of removing the sponge and squeezing it several times in a bucket of old tank water during a water change. This clears accumulated waste from the foam without killing the beneficial bacteria colony. Never rinse a sponge filter under tap water -- chlorine kills the bacterial colony instantly. The sponge itself should never be replaced; it improves with age as the bacterial colony matures and densifies.
Instant cycle transfer -- move an established sponge to seed a new tank -- a sponge filter that has been running in an established tank for two or more months carries a mature bacterial colony capable of immediately processing ammonia in a new tank. Moving an established sponge to a new setup eliminates the weeks-long nitrogen cycle establishment period and allows shrimp to be introduced to a new tank significantly sooner than with an uncycled filter.

Getting Started
1Connect airline tubing from an air pump to the uplift tube of the sponge filter -- place the sponge filter in the tank, connect airline tubing from the air pump to the top of the uplift tube, and turn the pump on. Adjust the air pump output or add an airline valve to control bubble rate. A slow to moderate bubble rate produces adequate flow without excessive surface agitation.
2Allow four to eight weeks for the bacterial colony to fully establish -- a new sponge filter takes time to develop a mature bacterial colony. During this period monitor ammonia and nitrite and perform water changes as needed to keep parameters safe. The filter is fully cycled when ammonia and nitrite consistently read zero. Seeding with an established sponge or bottled bacteria accelerates this process.
3Maintain by squeezing in old tank water during water changes -- never use tap water -- when the sponge becomes visibly clogged with detritus, remove it during a water change and squeeze it several times in a bucket of the removed tank water. Reinstall immediately. Perform this maintenance every two to four weeks depending on bioload.
