Rotala Green

Bright, airy, and reliably green — a fast-growing stem plant that makes every tank feel alive.

Easy & Fast-Growing Low to High Light CO₂ Not Required Midground to Background Shrimp-Friendly Micro-Cover Nature & Dutch Layouts

Rotala Green (Rotala rotundifolia 'Green') is one of the most reliably cheerful plants in the hobby. Unlike the red-blushing variants of its species, this cultivar holds soft lime-to-leafy green tones across a wide range of lighting conditions — no CO₂ chasing, no special spectrum tricks required. Its narrow, delicate leaves and naturally airy branching habit make it a natural fit for midground and background groupings in nature-style aquascapes, Dutch layouts, and Neocaridina or Caridina shrimp tanks where dense, fine-leafed cover is always welcome.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

Stays green across all light levels — unlike other Rotala variants that shift toward red or pink under high light, Rotala Green holds its bright green coloration reliably regardless of intensity. Fast growth with regular trimming — stems grow quickly and respond well to pruning, branching out from cut points and building increasingly dense, bushy clusters over time. Soft, delicate leaf texture — narrow, slightly curved leaves give the plant a fine, feathery quality that adds airy texture and visual depth to midground and background placements. Natural micro-cover for shrimp — the branching stems and fine leaves create layered hiding spots and biofilm-rich surfaces that shrimp and fry actively use for grazing and shelter. CO₂ improves fullness but isn't required — plants grow and look good without CO₂ supplementation; adding it noticeably increases stem density, leaf size, and overall compactness. Strong contrast with red plants and dark hardscape — the consistent bright green pairs naturally with red stem plants, dark driftwood, and stone-based layouts, providing visual balance and depth.

Getting Started

1 Plant in tight clusters — group several stems close together in the midground or background to achieve the dense, hedge-like appearance Rotala Green is known for. Spacing stems too far apart leads to a sparse look early on.
2 Set lighting to medium or higher — Rotala Green adapts to low light but grows faster and more compactly under medium to high intensity. Keep photoperiods consistent to encourage steady, even growth.
3 Dose balanced nutrients — provide both macros and micros regularly, particularly if growing without CO₂. Adequate nutrients prevent yellowing and support the vivid green coloration this plant is prized for.
4 Trim tops and replant cuttings — when stems reach the desired height, trim the tops and replant them directly alongside the existing stems. This is the fastest way to build a full, layered bush without waiting for natural branching.
💡 Bonus Tip

For a full, cloud-like bush, trim the tops regularly and replant them into the same cluster — this encourages dense branching at multiple levels and creates a lush, tiered green hedge much faster than letting stems grow unchecked.
