Paskai Red Neon (Pseudomugil luminatus), also known as the Red Neon Blue-Eye Rainbowfish, is a nano rainbowfish from the coastal lowland swamps and forest streams of Papua Province, Indonesia. It was sold in the hobby for years as Pseudomugil paskai before being formally described as a distinct species in 2016. The colouration of adult males in peak condition is extraordinary for a fish barely 1.2 inches long -- the body glows red to orange-red, the eyes are a vivid electric blue, the fins carry scattered black spots and pale yellow-white markings on the tips, and a vivid blue iridescent stripe runs along the dorsal surface. In subdued lighting against dark substrate the fish appears to emit its own light. Native to blackwater habitats stained with tannins from leaf litter, it performs best in soft, slightly acidic water and a heavily planted setup with floating plants to diffuse overhead lighting. One of the most shrimp-compatible fish in the hobby due to its tiny mouth and peaceful disposition. Note: the species is IUCN Endangered in the wild due to habitat destruction -- most available specimens are captive-bred, which is strongly preferred.

The Glow Effect
Glowing red to orange-red body with electric blue eyes -- appears fluorescent under aquarium lighting. The body colouration of a peak-condition male P. luminatus has a neon quality that few freshwater fish match at any size. The red-orange is saturated and vivid, the blue eyes create a startling colour contrast at the head, and the overall impression under appropriate lighting is of a fish generating its own light rather than reflecting ambient light. This effect is most pronounced in subdued lighting against a dark substrate -- the brighter the tank, the more the colour washes out.
Scattered black spots on fins with white to yellow markings on the tips -- intricate fin patterning at close range. The fins of adult males carry scattered dark spots against a pale base, with white to yellow-white markings on the fin tips and the upper edge of the pectoral fins. This patterning adds a level of close-range visual detail that makes the fish interesting at any viewing distance -- striking from across the room, intricate up close.
Males display continuously -- fin-spreading and colour intensification as constant social behaviour. Male P. luminatus display to each other and to females almost continuously, spreading and holding their fins erect and intensifying their body colour as part of normal social interaction. This displaying is not aggressive in the sense of causing injury but produces constant visible activity and colour changes that make the group endlessly engaging to observe.
Subdued lighting, dark substrate, and floating plants are essential for peak colour expression. In a brightly lit tank with a pale substrate the colour of P. luminatus fades significantly and the fish become secretive. Dark substrate, floating plants like Frogbit or Salvinia to diffuse overhead light, and a photoperiod of 8 to 10 hours at moderate intensity produce the conditions where the glow effect is most vivid and the fish are most active and visible.
Keep in groups of 8 or more -- timid and pale in small numbers. Like all Pseudomugil species, the Red Neon Blue-Eye requires a social group to show natural behaviour and full colour. Groups below 6 result in hiding, fading, and stress. A group of 10 to 15 in a 15 to 20-gallon setup produces the displaying behaviour and collective colour impact the species is capable of.
Shrimp Compatibility
Outstanding Shrimp Companion
Tiny mouth -- adult shrimp are completely safe. Ideal tankmate for Caridina and Neocaridina. P. luminatus is considered by many experienced keepers to be the single best fish companion for a shrimp tank. The mouth is so small that adult shrimp of all sizes are safe. In a planted tank with dense moss and fine-leaved plants shrimplet survival is very high. Multiple sources specifically identify dwarf shrimp as the ideal tankmate for this species.
Parameter overlap with Caridina and soft-water Neocaridina setups is excellent. P. luminatus prefers pH 5.5 to 7.5 and soft water, aligning well with both Caridina parameters and soft-water Neocaridina setups. The blackwater aesthetic -- tannins, Almond Leaves, dark substrate -- suits both the fish and Caridina shrimp simultaneously. A 15 to 20-gallon Caridina blackwater setup with a school of Red Neon Blue-Eyes is one of the most visually spectacular and most biologically coherent nano tank combinations in the hobby.
Do not keep with larger, boisterous, or aggressive fish. P. luminatus is easily outcompeted for food and stressed by larger or more active tankmates. Keep with shrimp, other Pseudomugil species, or similarly sized peaceful nano fish only. Do not mix with other Pseudomugil species if breeding true is a priority as hybridisation is possible.
Most available specimens are captive-bred -- always source captive-bred stock. The wild population of P. luminatus is IUCN Endangered due to habitat destruction in its restricted native range in Papua. Captive-bred specimens are widely available, well-adapted to aquarium life, and the responsible choice. Wild-caught specimens should be avoided.
