Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp

Vivid red base, crisp white banding, and tiger genetics — warm color with the same bold pattern intensity.

Red & White Banding Tiger Caridina Genetics Soft Acidic Water Active & Social Planted Tank Ready Intermediate Keeper

The Red Fancy Tiger Shrimp is a selectively bred Caridina tiger variant carrying the same enhanced pattern intensity as its black counterpart, expressed here in a vivid red base with crisp white banding across the body. The "Fancy" designation reflects the improved color saturation and pattern definition achieved through selective breeding over the standard tiger line. Where the Black Fancy Tiger offers stark monochromatic contrast, the Red delivers warmth and vibrancy — an equally striking shrimp that reads differently against planted tanks and hardscape. Both variants share the same care requirements and can be kept together successfully on tiger parameters.

Color & Behavior Over Time

Vivid red base with white banding — the red coloration ranges from warm orange-red to deeper brick red depending on the individual, with white bands running across the body in the characteristic tiger pattern. Band definition and width vary naturally between shrimp. Color depth tied to water stability — red pigmentation is at its richest in well-maintained, stable water conditions. Stress, parameter swings, or poor diet all contribute to washed-out coloration that recovers once conditions improve. Post-molt softening is temporary — freshly molted shrimp appear paler until the new shell fully hardens over 24–48 hours. The red tones return to full intensity once the molt is complete. Pairs naturally with green plant backgrounds — the warm red tones contrast particularly well against bright green stem plants and mosses, creating a more dynamic color interplay than the cooler black and white variant produces in the same setting. Active, social, and colony-oriented — Red Fancy Tigers are confident and visible in groups, spending the day grazing across botanicals, hardscape, and plant surfaces. Groups of eight or more display the most natural, active behavior. Compatible with Black Fancy Tigers — both variants share identical tiger parameters and can be housed together without concern, often producing offspring with a range of color expressions across the red and black spectrum.

Getting Started

1 Establish a mature, cycled tank — Red Fancy Tigers settle best into aquariums with developed biofilm and stable water chemistry. A fully cycled tank with consistent parameters reduces acclimation stress and supports confident behavior from the start.
2 Dial in tiger parameters — target pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–8, and KH 0–4 at 68–76°F. Soft water with low to zero KH supports reliable molting cycles and long-term colony health. RO water remineralized to these values is the most consistent approach.
3 Plant densely and add natural coverMosses, fine-leafed plants, and driftwood provide grazing surfaces and shelter that encourage visible, active behavior. Dense green planting in particular brings out the contrast of the red coloration beautifully.
4 Feed a varied, quality diet — rotate between biofilm-supporting foods, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables to support pigment depth, healthy molting, and reproductive activity throughout the colony.
💡 Bonus Tip

Red Fancy Tigers show their best coloration against dark substrates and in tanks with moderate rather than intense lighting — very bright light can wash out the red tones, while softer, warmer light enhances the depth and warmth of the coloration considerably.
