Purple Crystal Shrimp, also known in the trade as Purple Zebra Shrimp, are Potamalpheops sp. Their small bodies and purple-toned markings give them a different character from the familiar solid-colour shrimp varieties. These are animals to enjoy at close range, where their pattern becomes easier to appreciate.
Despite the Crystal name, these are not Crystal Red or Crystal Black bee shrimp, and they are not Neocaridina. Plan a quiet, established freshwater aquarium with sheltered grazing areas. Their breeding biology is different from the direct-developing dwarf shrimp commonly kept in freshwater colonies.

A Different Kind of Crystal Shrimp
Identity matters. The correct listing is Potamalpheops sp. Avoid using the name alone to assume the same care or breeding approach as bee shrimp.Subtle colour and pattern. Purple bands and translucent areas can look different with lighting and background. Expect individual variation rather than a uniform solid purple body.Give them quiet grazing space. Fine plants, leaf litter and small crevices create sheltered areas. Avoid predatory fish and provide food in places these small shrimp can reach.Not a standard freshwater breeding colony. Their larval development requires specialised conditions beyond a normal freshwater shrimp tank. Do not expect the colony to reproduce like Neocaridina.
How to Set It UpGetting Started
1Mature the aquarium first. Confirm zero ammonia and nitrite and establish grazing surfaces before introduction. Keep oxygenation good and avoid excessive heat.
2Provide fine shelter. Use moss, small pieces of wood and shrimp-safe cover. Protect filter intakes so small animals cannot be drawn in.
3Acclimate carefully. Introduce them gradually to stable water conditions. Avoid abrupt chemistry changes or disturbance while they settle.
4Watch feeding closely. Offer tiny portions of suitable shrimp food and check that it reaches their sheltered areas. Remove leftovers rather than letting food accumulate.
Bonus Tip
A sheltered feeding spot close to the glass makes it easier to check these small shrimp without moving their cover. Observe patiently, especially while new arrivals settle in.
