Freshwater Snails

Pagoda Snail

A rugged, tiered shell with architectural character — nature's own hardscape piece.

Biofilm & Organic Grazer Shrimp Safe Peaceful Community Tank Ridged Architectural Shell Low to Moderate Lighting Southeast Asia Origin

Few freshwater snails have a shell as immediately recognizable as the Pagoda Snail (Brotia pagodula). Its elongated, ridged whorls stack in a pronounced stepped pattern that genuinely earns the pagoda name — a natural sculptural accent in any aquascape. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is a methodical grazer that pairs beautifully with Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp, moving quietly through the tank while keeping surfaces clean.

Appearance & Behavior Over Time

Distinctive ridged whorls — the shell's raised, stepped profile sets it apart from any other freshwater snail, adding genuine textural interest to an aquascape. Earthy, rugged coloration — shell tones run from medium brown to deeper earthy hues, with natural variation in ridge sharpness and surface texture between individuals. Ridges sharpen with age — juveniles may show softer ridge definition that becomes more pronounced and dramatic as the snail matures and the shell grows. New growth differences are normal — contrast between older shell sections and fresh new growth is expected and a healthy sign of active development in stable conditions. Slow, methodical grazing — works steadily across rocks, driftwood, and substrate surfaces, feeding on biofilm and organic matter at a calm, unhurried pace.

Getting Started

1 Establish the tank first — Pagoda Snails thrive in mature, cycled aquariums where biofilm and organic matter have developed naturally on hardscape and substrate.
2 Use sand or fine gravel for substrate and add plenty of stones, driftwood, or botanicals to give them varied, textured surfaces to explore and graze on.
3 Hold water parameters steady — target pH 6.8–8.0, GH 6–12, and KH 2–8. Consistent mineral levels are especially important for supporting the strong, well-defined shell growth this species is known for.
4 Supplement when biofilm is low — offer algae wafers or blanched vegetables to keep Pagoda Snails well fed when natural food sources are running thin.
💡 Bonus Tip

Providing plenty of hard surfaces such as stones or driftwood encourages natural grazing behavior and helps keep Pagoda Snails active and visible throughout the tank.
