Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) is the carpeting plant that made the low-tech foreground carpet achievable. Small, round, bright green leaves on fine creeping stems spread laterally across the substrate by sending out horizontal runners that root as they grow — building a dense, even carpet layer that stays low to the substrate surface and fills the foreground of a planted layout with a uniformity and neatness that no other plant in the catalog replicates at this scale. It is more forgiving than Dwarf Hairgrass and more manageable than Hemianthus callitrichoides, carpeting reliably under medium light without CO₂ at a pace that rewards patience — slower than in a high-tech setup but genuine and sustained. The fine leaf scale is proportionally appropriate for nano tanks in a way that larger foreground plants are not, and the vivid bright green holds consistently once the carpet is established. Fully safe with all Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails — shrimp graze the carpet surface actively and continuously.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

Tiny round leaves on creeping stems that spread by runners — Monte Carlo's growth mechanism is horizontal rather than vertical. Each node produces small, round, bright green leaves and sends out lateral runners that root at intervals as they travel across the substrate surface. The carpet builds from the initial planting outward — coverage spreading gradually in all directions as runners establish and produce their own secondary runners. Under good conditions the carpet front advances visibly week by week. More achievable without CO₂ than most carpeting plants — Monte Carlo occupies a realistic middle ground between demanding high-tech carpet plants like HC Cuba that require CO₂ to carpet reliably, and easy low-tech foreground plants that stay loose and do not form a true carpet. Under medium to high light without CO₂, Monte Carlo carpets — slowly but genuinely. The process takes longer than in a CO₂-injected setup, often two to four months for full coverage versus four to eight weeks with CO₂, but the end result is comparable and the journey is manageable. CO₂ injection significantly accelerates spread and density — in tanks with CO₂ injection, Monte Carlo spreads noticeably faster, produces denser internode coverage, stays flatter to the substrate, and achieves full carpet more quickly than in equivalent no-CO₂ conditions. CO₂ is not required but is the single most impactful addition for a keeper who wants the carpet to establish within weeks rather than months. Liquid carbon supplements provide a partial benefit at lower cost and complexity. Bright vivid green that holds across the carpet once established — Monte Carlo leaves are a clear, bright green that reads vividly against dark substrate and provides strong contrast with the deeper, darker greens of midground plants like Anubias and Buce. The color is consistent across the carpet once established under stable conditions — no yellowing gradient from center to edge, no fading in the lower canopy. The uniformity of color is part of what makes a mature Monte Carlo carpet visually effective. A shrimp colony moving across a well-established Monte Carlo carpet — visible clearly against the bright green surface — is one of the most satisfying foreground observations in a planted shrimp tank. The carpet does not suffer from shrimp grazing and is not disturbed by shrimp moving across it. Requires trimming to maintain carpet form over time — an established Monte Carlo carpet will eventually begin to grow upward as well as laterally if left untrimmed, lifting off the substrate surface and losing the flat, dense carpet quality that makes it distinctive. Regular trimming with scissors — cutting horizontally across the carpet to keep it at 1–2cm height — maintains the form, stimulates denser growth from the cut stems, and prevents the lower portions of the carpet from dying off due to light exclusion from overgrown upper growth.

Getting Started

1 Divide into small portions and plant densely across the foreground — separate the initial planting into small sections of three to five stems each and plant them 1–2cm apart across the entire foreground area you want carpeted, pushing each portion just deep enough into the substrate to anchor it — 1cm is sufficient. Dense initial planting significantly shortens the time to full coverage — the runners from each planted section reach their neighbours sooner, knitting the carpet together faster than widely spaced specimens that must travel further to connect.
2 Use a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs — Monte Carlo feeds significantly through its roots and benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate such as an active aquasoil, or from root tabs placed beneath the planting area. In inert substrates without root tab supplementation the growth rate is reduced and the carpet may establish unevenly, with faster growth in areas where organic material has accumulated and slower growth in depleted zones. Root tabs placed every 10–15cm across the carpet area compensate effectively for inert substrate limitations.
3 Maximise light intensity at the substrate level — Monte Carlo is a foreground plant receiving light filtered through the water column above it. Position the light fixture to deliver the highest practical intensity at the substrate — closer mounting, higher output settings, and avoiding floating plants or dense midground growth that shades the foreground all contribute to a faster establishing carpet. The substrate level is where the light intensity is lowest in any tank, and Monte Carlo's carpeting speed is directly responsive to how much usable light reaches it there.
4 Be patient — and trim once the carpet lifts — the most common reason Monte Carlo fails is impatience: disturbing the planting before runners have anchored, replanting sections that appear to be struggling but are simply establishing, or abandoning the carpet before it has had time to knit together. Once planted, leave it completely undisturbed for at least four weeks before assessing progress. Growth will be invisible initially as the plant establishes roots, then visible and accelerating as runners begin to spread. First trim when the carpet surface lifts noticeably above 2cm.
💡 Bonus Tip

Monte Carlo establishes most successfully when planted during the first fill of a new tank before any livestock is introduced — the undisturbed substrate, full light access without competition, and the option to run the tank at high CO₂ or liquid carbon doses during the establishment period without any concern for invertebrate sensitivity gives the carpet the best possible start. A carpet planted into an established, inhabited tank is achievable but slower and more disruptive — if you are planning a Monte Carlo foreground, build the layout around the carpet from the start rather than adding it later.
