Lotus Pod

A large, architecturally striking seed pod with a distinctive honeycomb cavity structure — the most visually bold botanical in the catalog and a natural botanical that gradually decomposes.

Gradually Decomposes Natural Botanical Addition Honeycomb Cavity Structure Mild Tannin Release Shrimp Refuge & Grazing Shrimp & Snail Safe

Lotus Pods are the dried seed heads of the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) — large, flat-topped pods with a distinctive honeycomb arrangement of circular seed cavities on their upper face that gives them an immediately recognisable architectural quality unlike any other botanical. In the aquarium, the pod gradually softens and decomposes. Its useful life varies with the pod and aquarium conditions; it is not a permanent hardscape item. They release a small amount of tannins during initial introduction but their primary contribution is structural rather than chemical — as a distinctive natural botanical that provides physical refuge, biofilm surface area, and a visual focal point with a character no manufactured decoration replicates. Shrimp occupy the seed cavities actively. Safe with all Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails.

Behavior & Benefits in the Tank

Gradually decomposes in the aquarium — the pod provides structure and grazing surfaces while it lasts, then softens and breaks down over time. Inspect its condition during routine maintenance; there is no guaranteed lifespan. Honeycomb seed cavities are actively occupied by shrimp — the circular seed cavities on the pod face are sized appropriately for dwarf shrimp to enter, shelter inside, and graze the interior surfaces. Shrimp discover and begin using the cavities quickly — individual shrimp visible sitting inside single cavities, grazing the inner walls, or sheltering during moulting is one of the most engaging behaviours a Lotus Pod produces. The cavities also trap fine organic material and develop biofilm interior surfaces that make them persistent foraging sites. Mild initial tannin release — diminishes quickly — the dried woody pod tissue releases a small amount of tannins during the first days in the tank — noticeably less than catappa leaves or Casuarina cones at equivalent mass. Pre-soaking largely eliminates this initial release. Tannin release and decomposition vary with the pod and aquarium conditions; its role is not exclusively structural. It is not a substitute for dedicated tannin-conditioning botanicals but contributes to the ambient tannin environment of a blackwater setup without dominating it. Accumulates biofilm across a large complex surface — the upper honeycomb face, the smooth curved underside, the stem attachment point, and the interior of each seed cavity all develop biofilm at different rates and with different textures — providing a varied foraging landscape that shrimp and snails work across continuously. The interior cavity surfaces develop particularly rich biofilm due to the sheltered, low-flow environment inside each chamber. Bold, architectural visual presence — the flat-topped, honeycomb-faced Lotus Pod has a structural visual quality that reads as a focal point rather than background texture. Positioned on dark substrate in an open area, a single Lotus Pod commands immediate attention and provides a natural visual anchor for a layout built around it — driftwood and plants arranged to complement rather than compete with it. Will float initially — pre-soaking or weighting required — Lotus Pods are buoyant when first introduced and will float at the surface until the wood tissue is fully waterlogged. Pre-soaking for 24–48 hours in hot water eliminates the floating period entirely. Alternatively, weight the pod with a small stone or piece of driftwood until it sinks naturally — typically two to five days without pre-soaking.

Preparation & Placement

1Pre-soak for 24–48 hours before introduction — submerge the pod in a container of hot water and place a weight on top to keep it submerged throughout the soak. Change the water once during soaking to remove the initial tannin flush. After 24–48 hours the pod will be fully waterlogged and sink immediately when placed in the tank, with the initial chemical release already removed from the water you will use.
2Position on substrate as a primary visual focal point — place the pod on the substrate with the honeycomb face upward in an open, visible area of the tank where it has clear space around it and can be viewed from the front. The cavities need unobstructed access for shrimp to enter and exit — avoid burying the pod partially or positioning it tightly against hardscape that blocks the face. Dark substrate beneath the pod emphasises the natural colour of the dried pod tissue.
3Check condition during routine maintenance — the Lotus Pod gradually decomposes, so monitor the pod and water quality as part of normal aquarium care. Remove loose debris or replace the pod as needed for your setup. The biofilm that develops across its surfaces over weeks and months is an asset — do not scrub or clean it during water changes. Allow it to age in place and develop the natural patina that accumulates over time.
💡 Bonus Tip

A Lotus Pod placed in a breeding setup or shrimp-specific nano tank is one of the most effective pieces of passive enrichment available — the combination of seed cavity shelter, consistent biofilm foraging surface, and the stimulation of natural exploratory behaviour that the cavity structure provokes produces noticeably more active and varied shrimp behaviour than a bare or flat-substrate tank provides. Shrimp that have had access to a Lotus Pod for several weeks spend visibly more time in active exploration and foraging than shrimp in tanks without structural complexity at the substrate level.

Aquatic botanicals

Policies & Disclaimers

Natural materials, preparation, water effects and the existing terms that apply to your order.

Natural variation & representative photos

Leaves, cones, pods, bark and cholla are natural materials. Pieces can vary in shape, color, thickness, texture and markings. Photographs show examples; they are not a promise of an identical piece or a matched set.

Use the listing and selected option for the quantity and any size range. A pack sold by count is not a standardized weight, and the same number of large pieces can add more material to an aquarium than smaller pieces. Wood, pods and bark also differ from one another in density and structure.

Dry leaves and other delicate materials can be brittle. Small edges, loose fragments or surface irregularities can occur, but this is not a blanket exclusion for damage. If an item appears substantially damaged, incorrect or short, document it and contact us.

Preparation: follow the particular listing

Review the preparation instructions for the exact botanical before adding it. Leaves, bark, cones, pods and wood do not all need the same treatment. Check for loose debris and rinse as appropriate; do not use soap, detergents or scented cleaning products.

Where the product calls for soaking or boiling, follow that guidance and allow material to cool fully before aquarium use. There is no universal boiling time or preparation recipe here. Do not assume preparation makes a natural item sterile or suitable for every species.

Prepare only what you intend to use and assess the material before introduction. If you are uncertain about a smell, coating or unexpected condition in the received package, ask before putting it in an established tank.

Floating, sinking & placement

Dry botanicals can float while they absorb water. Sinking time depends on the material, thickness and preparation; do not assume all pieces will sink immediately or on the same schedule.

Position pieces so they cannot block equipment, obstruct water movement or create an unsuitable tight space for your animals. A decorative shelter still needs to suit the size and behavior of the inhabitants. Check placement again as the material softens or moves.

Tannins, amber water & pH

Many botanicals release tannins and other dissolved organic compounds, which can tint water amber or brown. The amount and speed of release vary by material, preparation, quantity and aquarium maintenance. Color intensity is not a dosing measurement.

Do not use water color as a substitute for testing pH or carbonate hardness (KH). Your water’s buffering capacity affects how it responds. A botanical does not provide a predictable fixed pH reduction or replace appropriate water preparation.

Introduce changes cautiously, especially in low-KH systems. Choose botanicals to suit the inhabitants and monitor actual water conditions rather than adding more to chase a darker color or an advertised visual effect.

Biofilm, softening & decomposition

Once submerged, natural materials become surfaces for microorganisms and gradually break down. A film can develop on wet wood or other botanicals, and shrimp may graze these surfaces. Leaves can soften, develop holes and eventually fragment as part of that process.

The pace differs between leaves, cones, bark, pods and wood. A rapidly softening leaf and a slowly changing piece of cholla should not be expected to last equally long. There is no universal replacement interval for all botanicals.

A film that develops after aquarium introduction should not be confused with visible mold or suspicious contamination inside a dry package. If newly received material appears compromised, photograph it and contact us before use. Do not dismiss every unusual coating or odor as harmless biofilm.

Add gradually & observe the aquarium

Adding a large amount of organic material at once can increase microbial activity and oxygen demand. Start conservatively, maintain water circulation and monitor the aquarium’s response before adding more.

Check water quality and observe your animals. Unexpected cloudiness, odor or distressed behavior calls for investigation, not simply another addition of botanicals. Remove excess decomposing material when appropriate to your tank and maintenance routine.

Botanicals can provide structure and grazing surfaces, but they do not replace filtration, water changes or a suitable diet. They are not a guaranteed treatment for illness or a promise of improved breeding, survival or coloration.

Storage before use

Keep unused dry botanicals dry and protected from moisture and contamination. Avoid storing them where aquarium splashes or condensation can reach the package. Retain the product label and keep different materials identifiable.

Do not put soaked pieces back into the dry supply. Follow any product-specific storage guidance, and ask about newly received material that has unexpected dampness or visible contamination.

Package problems, incorrect items & questions

Inspect your botanicals and its packaging on arrival. If the package is torn, wet, leaking, incorrectly labeled or appears to contain the wrong item or quantity, contact support@superiorshrimpaquatics.com promptly with your order number and clear photos. Include the label, the affected product and packaging so we can understand the concern.

Keep the original packaging and avoid using a product that appears contaminated or compromised while you ask for advice. This is practical documentation guidance, not a new claim deadline or a promise of a particular resolution. A routine unopened return and a report that an item arrived damaged or incorrect are different concerns; tell us which applies.
