Aquatic Plants

Jungle Vallisneria

Broad, flat ribbon leaves that can reach a metre or more — the most imposing background plant in the catalog, suited to larger tanks where genuine scale and mass are the goal.

Very Large Background Plant Broad Flat Ribbon Leaves Spreads Aggressively by Runners No CO₂ Required Low to High Light Larger Tanks Recommended

Jungle Vallisneria (Vallisneria americana) is the largest Vallisneria in the catalog and one of the largest commonly available aquarium plants — a species whose broad, flat ribbon leaves grow substantially wider and longer than Corkscrew Vallisneria, reaching 60–100cm or more in established specimens in tanks with vertical space to accommodate them. Where Corkscrew Vallisneria fills the background with spiralled, compact, moderately-sized leaves, Jungle Val fills it with mass — broad, sweeping ribbons that drift and sway in current and create the dense, imposing jungle-like background the common name describes. It spreads more aggressively by runners than Corkscrew Val and requires more active management in smaller setups; in larger tanks it is one of the most effective and lowest-maintenance ways to establish a full, naturalistic planted background without CO₂. Sensitive to liquid carbon supplements in the same way as Corkscrew Val — avoid glutaraldehyde-based products. Fully safe with all Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails.

Growth & Scale in the Tank

Broad flat leaves reaching 60–100cm+ in good conditions — Jungle Val produces leaves substantially wider and longer than Corkscrew Val — flat rather than spiralled, with a width of 1–2cm and lengths that fill tall tank backgrounds completely and continue extending horizontally across the surface once they reach the top. In tanks 50cm or taller with good light and substrate nutrition, Jungle Val will reach the surface and require regular trimming of leaf tips to prevent complete surface coverage. In very large or deep tanks it can be left to develop to full scale without management. Broad leaves sway with current in long, sweeping motion — the wide, flat ribbon leaves of Jungle Val respond to water movement with a broader, slower, more dramatic swaying than the finer leaves of Corkscrew Val — long sweeps from side to side rather than the tighter twisting motion of the spiralled variety. In a tank with moderate background flow, the visual effect is genuinely impressive — a dense wall of long moving ribbon that no other commonly available plant replicates at this scale without CO₂. Spreads aggressively by runners — active management required in smaller tanks — Jungle Val sends out runners that produce daughter plants at intervals and colonises available substrate quickly once established. In tanks under 90 litres, runner production can overwhelm the layout within months if left unmanaged — removing runners and daughter plants regularly is the primary maintenance task. In larger tanks the spread is an asset rather than a problem, progressively filling the background without replanting effort. Roots deeply and feeds primarily through substrate — like all Vallisneria, Jungle Val roots strongly into substrate and draws the majority of its nutrition from there. Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs placed at regular intervals across the planting area directly and immediately improve leaf size, growth rate, and runner production compared to inert substrate without supplementation. A well-fed Jungle Val in deep nutrient-rich substrate produces noticeably larger leaves and a denser stand than one in nutrient-poor conditions. Sensitive to liquid carbon supplements — glutaraldehyde-based liquid carbon products such as Seachem Excel and equivalent products can cause leaf damage and melt in Vallisneria at standard dosing rates. If your tank uses liquid carbon supplementation, Jungle Val is not compatible. CO₂ gas injection at moderate levels is tolerated and improves growth, but is entirely unnecessary for a healthy, spreading stand. Suitable for larger tanks — understated in nano setups — the full visual impact of Jungle Val requires a tank with enough background height and width for the broad leaves to develop to scale and the sweeping motion to read clearly. In tanks under 60 litres the leaves fill the background quickly and must be trimmed frequently to prevent total domination — Corkscrew Val is the more appropriate Vallisneria choice for smaller setups. In tanks of 90 litres and above, Jungle Val delivers a planted background presence that no other no-CO₂ plant approaches.

Getting Started

1Plant in the background with roots in substrate and crown above — push roots into substrate with the crown just at the surface — not buried. Space initial plants 5–8cm apart across the background. Jungle Val fills gaps by runner production so initial spacing can be wider than for slower-spreading plants — the stand will consolidate itself. In tanks where background coverage is urgent, closer spacing of 3–4cm accelerates the initial filled appearance while runners develop.
2Use nutrient-rich substrate or dense root tab placement — place root tabs every 10–12cm across the full planting area before introducing plants. Jungle Val's rapid growth rate and large leaf mass require a consistent, sustained nutrient supply from the substrate. In aquasoil this need is met automatically; in inert substrate without root tabs, growth is significantly slower and leaves remain smaller than the species is capable of producing under proper conditions.
3Direct filter flow across the background for maximum leaf movement — position the filter outlet to produce a moderate current across the background planting zone. The sweeping, dramatic leaf movement of established Jungle Val is its defining visual quality and is entirely dependent on water movement — in still water the broad leaves hang vertically and flat, losing the animated quality that distinguishes the plant. Even moderate flow produces the characteristic broad swaying motion.
4Trim leaf tips regularly and pull runners in smaller tanks — once leaves reach the surface, trim individual leaf tips with scissors before they cover the water surface. In tanks under 90 litres, also pull excess runners and daughter plants monthly to prevent the planting from overwhelming the layout. In larger tanks, runner management can be less frequent — decide how densely you want the background planted and thin to that level every four to six weeks.
💡 Bonus Tip

Jungle Val and Corkscrew Vallisneria planted together in the same background — Jungle Val at the rear corners and sides, Corkscrew Val filling the centre — creates a varied Vallisneria background with two distinct leaf scales and movement characters that reads as more naturalistic and visually interesting than either variety planted alone across the full width. The broad flat sweep of Jungle Val at the edges frames the finer spiralled movement of Corkscrew Val in the centre, producing a composed, layered background from two plants with identical care requirements.

Choosing your portions, using the plant promotion, and knowing what to expect when your plants arrive.

Buy 2 Get 1 Free: add all three

Choose three eligible plant items and add all three to your cart, including the plant you want free. The discount applies automatically at checkout; no code is needed. Adding only two items does not add a third plant for you.

Mix and match eligible varieties or choose multiple quantities of the same eligible plant. The least expensive eligible item is free. For example, with eligible items priced at $5, $8 and $10, the $5 item is discounted and the plant subtotal is $18 before shipping and tax.

The offer repeats for complete qualifying groups: three eligible items give one free, six give two free, and nine give three free. The current offer has no per-order use limit. Items must be included in the promotion; Plant Weights and other non-plant accessories do not qualify.

An item means the sale unit in your cart. One bunch, cup, portion or multipack counts as one item when purchased at quantity one, not one item for every stem, leaf or bulb inside it. Check the listing and selected option for what each unit contains.

Check the discount and quantities in your order summary before paying. Other promotions can affect the final discount; multiple product discounts do not stack on the same item. This is an online checkout offer, not an automatic in-store POS discount.

Portions, sizes & what you receive

Read this plant’s description and selected option for its sale format, portion size and any stated stem or plant count. A bunch, loose portion, rooted plant, bulb, cup and mounted plant are different products; there is no single size or count that applies to every plant we sell.

A mature height or spread describes potential growth in an aquarium, not the size shipped. Use the advertised purchase portion to plan your order. A full carpet, dense moss-covered surface or established group in a photograph may require several portions and time to grow.

Do not assume that a pot, planting weight, rock, wood, substrate or other display accessory is included unless the listing explicitly says it is. If the received portion appears different from the selected listing, photograph it with its packaging and contact us promptly.

Photos, color & natural variation

Photos illustrate the named plant or variety and its appearance. Living plants vary in leaf size, shape, root development, branching and fullness; a photo of an established specimen is not a measurement of each portion shipped. The product description and selected option remain the reference for your purchase.

Aquarium lighting, camera settings and the growing environment affect perceived color. Red or pink varieties can look different under different lighting and growing conditions. Do not use a photograph alone to select a plant’s care requirements or expect immediate mature coloration.

Above-water growth & the transition underwater

Some aquarium plants can grow with their leaves above water as well as submerged. These growth forms can have different leaf shapes and appearances. New underwater growth may look different from older leaves as the plant adjusts. This explanation does not mean every plant is supplied in the same growth form; follow any specific information in the listing.

Leaf loss or softening after a change of environment is often called melt. Look at the plant as a whole and its growing points rather than judging only one older leaf. Do not assume that a damaged plant is simply transitioning or wait for new growth before reporting an arrival problem.

This is background care information, not a new exclusion from the Live Arrival Guarantee. Arrival damage is assessed under the existing policy.

Planting: match the method to the plant

For stem plants, separate the stems and plant with room between them. For rosette plants, position the roots in the substrate without burying the crown. Remove transport bindings and growing material carefully where appropriate.

For Anubias and Java fern, keep the rhizome exposed rather than burying it. Moss can be divided into smaller portions and attached to suitable hardscape. Floating plants belong at the surface. Bulbs and tubers need species-specific planting depth; do not assume every type should be fully buried.

Keep plants damp while working. Follow the individual listing for placement and care, especially when a plant has unusual requirements. These are planting tips, not additional conditions for a claim.

Growth, tank conditions & choosing companions

Plan for the plant’s mature size, available light and the space it will occupy. A background stem plant, slow-growing rhizome plant and floating plant serve different roles; a purchase portion does not instantly create a finished aquascape.

Use the listing’s guidance on light, nutrients and carbon dioxide rather than assuming every plant needs the same setup. Growth rate and final appearance depend on aquarium conditions and maintenance. More light alone is not a substitute for a balanced setup.

Consider animals that dig, uproot or eat plants before choosing placement. Floating growth can shade plants below it, and fast-growing plants may need thinning. Observe new growth and make gradual, species-appropriate adjustments.

Hitchhikers & introducing plants

Our existing policy does not guarantee pest-free arrival. Plants can carry tiny organisms or eggs, including snail eggs, despite inspection. Inspect new plants before introduction, and consider separate observation or quarantine to protect an established aquarium.

Do not assume a plant is sterile, pesticide-free or safe for a particular treatment unless the listing explicitly provides that information. Sensitive leaves, mosses and roots can respond differently to dips. Research the exact plant and any treatment before using it; do not apply an animal medication or a strong dip by default.

Arrival problems: document and contact us promptly

For damaged or dead plants, email support@superiorshrimpaquatics.com within two hours of the carrier’s recorded delivery time. Use the email address on the order and include all arrival concerns in your first message.
