Java Medaka, or Javanese Ricefish, are Oryzias javanicus. Their pale, translucent bodies catch the light with a quiet pearly effect, making them an appealing choice when you want movement without a strongly saturated colour scheme.
A group brings out more natural social behaviour as the fish explore the upper and middle aquarium. Give them plants for shelter, open water for swimming and a secure lid. This is the Javanese ricefish, distinct from the Japanese Medaka often sold under the broader ricefish name.

A Pearly Group for the Upper Aquarium
Keep a social group. Plan for six or more in an appropriately sized aquarium. A single fish or small pack is best used to add to an existing group.Provide planting and open water. Plants offer security while an open upper area gives the fish room to forage. Leave surface access when using floating plants.Avoid an acidic specialist setup. Neutral to alkaline water is a more suitable starting point for this species. Maintain stable conditions rather than using its adaptability as a reason for sudden changes.Use a secure cover. These small fish can jump through gaps. Check openings around hoses and equipment as well as the main lid.
Community CareTankmates and Daily Care
1Choose compatible neighbours. Keep with peaceful fish that share the same water and temperature requirements. Avoid larger predators and species that dominate feeding.
2Treat shrimp compatibility cautiously. Any fish may eat tiny shrimp or eggs. Dense cover can reduce encounters, but a separate shrimp aquarium is the better choice when breeding success matters.
3Feed appropriately sized foods. Offer a varied diet of quality prepared food and suitably small frozen or live foods. Feed modest portions and check that every fish has an opportunity to eat.
4Maintain stable, clean water. Introduce fish to an established aquarium with zero ammonia and nitrite. Use a secure lid, acclimate carefully and keep up with regular maintenance.
Keeper’s Note
Dark wood or a shaded background can make the pearly bodies easier to appreciate. Arrange cover so the fish can move between shelter and open water without being boxed into one corner.
