Bucephalandra 'Red Purple'

Deep red to purple foliage with an iridescent sheen — a rare rhizome plant that rewards patience and low light.

Red to Purple Foliage Iridescent Leaf Sheen Rhizome — Do Not Bury Low to Medium Light No CO₂ Required Shrimp & Fry Safe

Bucephalandra 'Red Purple' is one of the more visually distinctive Bucephalandra cultivars available — a compact rhizome plant native to the fast-moving streams of Borneo that produces deep red to purple leaves with a characteristic iridescent sheen that catches light differently depending on the viewing angle. Like all Buce, it grows slowly, tolerates low light without CO₂, and attaches readily to driftwood and rock surfaces over time. It is one of the few aquatic plants that offers genuine color in the red-to-purple spectrum without requiring high light or CO₂, making it a compelling choice for low-tech planted tanks, shrimp setups, and hardscape-focused aquascapes where the plant's compact size and striking coloration can be appreciated up close.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

Deep red to purple foliage with iridescent sheen — the leaf coloration shifts between red, burgundy, and purple depending on light angle and intensity, with a characteristic blue-green iridescent sheen on the leaf surface that is distinctive to Bucephalandra and most visible under direct light. Slow but steady rhizome growth — Buce is among the slowest-growing aquatic plants in the hobby, adding leaves gradually over weeks. This is normal, not a sign of poor health. Once established, the plant is extremely durable and long-lived. Initial melting is common and temporary — Bucephalandra frequently sheds older leaves after being introduced to a new tank as it adjusts to new water parameters. New growth emerging from the rhizome tip is a reliable sign that the plant has settled and is recovering well. Attaches naturally to hardscape over time — the rhizome develops small roots that grip driftwood and porous rock surfaces progressively. Initial attachment with thread or super glue gel speeds up the process and prevents the plant from drifting before roots take hold. Color intensifies with better light and nutrients — while 'Red Purple' holds its coloration under low light, medium lighting and regular liquid fertilizer dosing brings out deeper, more saturated red and purple tones and enhances the iridescent sheen on established leaves. Shrimp graze the leaf surface constantly — the textured Buce leaves accumulate biofilm that Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails graze on actively, making it a functional and visual contribution to any shrimp tank.

Getting Started

1 Never bury the rhizome — the horizontal stem connecting roots and leaves must remain fully above the substrate at all times. Burying it causes rot that spreads quickly through the plant. Attach to hardscape or rest on the substrate surface instead.
2 Attach to driftwood or rock — use thread or a small amount of super glue gel to fix the rhizome to a piece of driftwood or porous stone. The roots will begin gripping the surface within a few weeks and the attachment will become self-sustaining over time.
3 Position in low to medium light — 'Red Purple' performs well even in shaded areas of the tank. Moderate light improves coloration and growth rate without introducing the algae risk that high light can bring to slow-growing rhizome plants.
4 Dose liquid fertilizer regularly — as an epiphyte, Buce takes up nutrients through its leaves rather than its roots. A regular liquid fertilizer routine covering both macros and micros supports consistent new growth and maintains the depth of the red and purple coloration over time.
💡 Bonus Tip

Don't mistake the initial melt for failure — Bucephalandra almost always sheds some leaves when moved to a new tank, and 'Red Purple' is no exception. Leave the rhizome in place, maintain stable water parameters, and watch the tip for new leaf growth. Recovery typically takes two to four weeks and the plant that emerges is fully acclimated and noticeably more vigorous than when it arrived.
