Assassin Snail

The most effective biological solution for pest snail control — a predatory snail that hunts, feeds, and looks good doing it.

Pest Snail Control Predatory Species Bold Yellow & Brown Shell Slow Reproduction Not Safe with Shrimp Beginner Friendly

The Assassin Snail (Clea helena) is a predatory freshwater snail native to Southeast Asia and the most reliable biological method for controlling pest snail populations in the aquarium hobby. Its striking yellow and dark brown banded shell makes it one of the more visually appealing snails available, and its methodical hunting behavior — tracking prey through the substrate and beneath the sand — makes it genuinely fascinating to observe. Assassin Snails will consume ramshorn snails, bladder snails, MTS, and other soft-bodied tank inhabitants, and reproduce slowly enough that population management is rarely a concern. They are not safe with shrimp — Assassin Snails will prey on shrimp, particularly juveniles and molting individuals, and should not be housed with any shrimp species you want to keep alive.

Appearance & Behavior Over Time

Bold yellow and brown banded shell — the elongated conical shell displays alternating yellow and dark brown bands in a pattern that is consistent and visually striking. Shell coloration and band definition vary slightly between individuals but the overall pattern is distinctive and unmistakable in the tank. Hunts through and beneath the substrate — Assassin Snails are active burrowers that track prey primarily through chemical cues beneath the sand or fine gravel. This hunting behavior means they are often partially or fully buried, emerging to feed and then retreating. Activity is most visible at night or in dim light. Effective against all common pest snail species — ramshorn snails, bladder snails, Malaysian trumpet snails, and pond snails are all prey. The Assassin Snail is most effective when introduced before pest populations become very large — a small group handles an early infestation efficiently; a massive established colony takes significantly longer to control. Will prey on shrimp — do not house together — Assassin Snails actively prey on shrimp, particularly during molts when shrimp are soft and vulnerable. This is not a compatibility caveat with workarounds — it is a hard incompatibility. Do not keep Assassin Snails in any tank containing shrimp you intend to keep. Slow reproduction keeps populations manageable — unlike pest snails that reproduce explosively, Assassin Snails lay single eggs in small clutches and grow slowly. Population growth is gradual and self-limiting, making overpopulation essentially a non-issue under normal aquarium conditions. Will scavenge when prey is scarce — once pest snail populations are reduced, Assassin Snails supplement their diet by scavenging on fish food, dead organisms, and other protein sources. Supplemental feeding with sinking protein-rich foods helps maintain condition after prey populations decline.

Getting Started

1 Introduce to a shrimp-free tank only — confirm that no shrimp are present before adding Assassin Snails. Even a single Assassin Snail in a shrimp tank will predate on shrimp given the opportunity. Once introduced, removing them completely from a planted tank with hardscape is extremely difficult.
2 Use sand or fine substrate — Assassin Snails burrow actively and hunt most effectively in fine-grained substrate. Sand allows them to track prey through the substrate layer and provides the natural hunting environment they are adapted for. Coarse gravel limits burrowing and reduces hunting efficiency.
3 Introduce early for best results — add Assassin Snails before pest populations become entrenched. A group of five to ten individuals handles a moderate infestation effectively. For large, established pest colonies, higher numbers and more time are required — there is no overnight fix, but consistent predation pressure will steadily reduce populations over weeks.
4 Supplement feed once pest numbers decline — as the target population is reduced, provide sinking protein-rich foods a few times per week to keep the Assassin Snails in good condition. A well-fed population maintains its health and continues providing long-term pest control through residual hunting.
💡 Bonus Tip

Assassin Snails are most active and hunt most effectively at night — if you want to observe their predatory behavior directly, check the tank an hour or two after lights out with a dim flashlight. You'll often find several individuals actively pursuing or feeding on pest snails in a way that's rarely visible during normal daylight hours.

The shipment takes so long and I got the snail and it is not alive

The shipment takes so long and I got the snail and it is not alive. It hasn’t moved since I put it in the tank.

Hey Belle,
We are transparent about our shipping process. Shipping only happens on Mondays (I work a full time job during the week) and that is posted multiple places. For your order, you selected UPS Ground shipping for your. That can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days. We are working with you currently to figure out if the snail is DOA or not, but still need the required pictures. Snails can hibernate up to a week after first getting them so its not uncommon.
